Robert “Bob” F. Black Sr., 73, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16th, 2023 at Winchester Hospital surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Eleanor (Kling) Black.
Bob was born in Arlington and spent his first few years in Cambridge before moving to the Central Square area of Woburn with his family. He attended Woburn Public Schools and eagerly enlisted in the United States Navy in 1968 amidst the Vietnam War. He served at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, MD, as an Aircraft Mechanic in Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ)-4.
Following his enlistment, Bob returned to Woburn and worked as a heavy diesel truck mechanic for several years before joining Teamsters, Local 25 as a truck driver. He drove for various trucking companies over the years including Tose-Fowler, St. Johnsbury, and USF Red Star from which he retired in 2006. Although Bob was humble in every regard, he said “I’ve got more miles backing up than you’ve got going forward” on more than one occasion.
In January 1989, Bob married his beloved wife Carolyn Black (Generazzo). Together, they dedicated their lives to their children, sharing in sporting events, graduations, weddings, as well as love and laughter around the dining room table.
In retirement, Bob found joy in service to his community as a member of the Woburn Lions Breakfast Club. He was very proud to plant the club’s Memory Tree in North Woburn, faithfully tending to it while it took root. Bob went on to become President and also served on the Board of Directors for many years.
Bob enjoyed travelling with his family when he could. A diehard Buddy Holly fan, Bob drove the family to Buddy’s hometown of Lubbock, TX. They also made many trips to Amish Country, PA, Vermont, and Aruba. In recent years, Bob and Carol visited Homer, AK for their anniversary and Bob said it was the most beautiful place he had ever seen.
When Bob was not behind the wheel, he was happiest on the ocean with a fishing rod in hand or pulling up lobster pots alongside his children. He also restored a 1959 Ford Thunderbird, ‘Peggy Sue,’ with his daughter that he proudly showed at local car shows and each year in Woburn’s annual Halloween parade. After Everett’s opening of Encore, Bob enjoyed trips to the casino!
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, sons Robert F. Black Jr., his wife Elizabeth A. and Patrick M. Rigione, and daughters Carla R. Geanis, her husband George J. of Woburn, and US Navy LT Commander Holly M. Vickers, her husband Kiel J. of Suffolk, VA; brother Frederick G., his wife Sharon F. of Scarborough, ME; grandchildren Nicolas R. and Giuliana E. Black of Woburn; and his beloved dog, Lola. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Anthony’s Parish, 851 Main Street, Woburn, on Thursday, August 24th at 11:30 a.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Calling Hours, in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, Wednesday, August 23rd 4-7 p.m. Remembrances may be made to honor Robert to the Woburn Lions Breakfast Club, PO Box 223, Woburn, MA 01801.

Bob will be tremendously missed by all who knew him. A true honor to have known him. Hugs to Carolyn and all of his family and Breakfast lion’s family.
Love Brian and Joy
Bob was such a great fellow Breakfast Club Lion. I miss him, his sense of humor, his leadership as a Past President and as an active participant in all of the Club activities. Bob and Carolyn were always there for the Club, through all of the events.
I will always remember my times with him throughout my time with the Woburn Lions Breakfast Club, forever in our hearts.
Sincerely and with best wishes,
Ed Friedrich
Fred, We are so sorry for your loss. It is not easy to write a condolence and sorry does not seem enough. I hope someday soon you can laugh, sigh, shake your heads over some memories of Rob. Knowing you and Robin since grade school and Ed knowing him as a Lion’s brother enriched our lives. He was a great Lion and always up to help. I enjoyed getting to know that Robert. May you all have all God’s Blessings and find peace.
My heart is breaking with the loss of my Big Brother. We loved sitting and talking about all the antics we pulled together growing up. He was a great brother and I always looked up to him. I was honored to have him stand by my side on my wedding day. I just wish that we could have had one more Black family vacation all together. Save me a place in heaven Big Brother and look for a V-tree for me so we can sit and reminisce. I will never be able to fill his shoes, but I want Carol and my nieces and nephews to know that I will be here for them.
How blessed I am to marry into this wonderful family. Bob was a great brother-in-law with a unique personality and sense of humor. During a card game, out of the blue, Bob started calling me Shirley. A nickname that stuck and that I would address in cards to him. Bob had a big heart and gentle soul. It makes me sad that he is not here with us, but grateful he was in our lives. My heart goes out to Carol (my Sis) and the family. We have been together through happy times and now in grief. Grieving means that we have loved. ♥️
I was privileged to know Bob the Lion and also the side of Bob the friend and family man. So many hearts are aching at his loss. My deepest condolences.
Bob was one of the first members to welcome me to the Breakfast Lions Club an we became friends right away.
Though he was sick a long time I always had him in my heart and prayers. Carolyn I feel your loss and pain, my love and condolences go out to you and your family. Much love,
Jane Fanjoy
