OBITUARY:
Gertrude (Simpson) Caulfield, a long time resident of Woburn, passed away at her home in North Reading, Wednesday, July 5th. The beloved wife of the late John J. Caulfield she was eighty-five years of age
Born in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Margaret ( Kelley) Simpson. Raised and educated in Cambridge Gertrude was a graduate of St. Marys High School.
Gertrude married her sweetheart John Caulfield in 1950. She was blessed with six children to whom they were devoted. Needless to say she was kept quite busy over the years! Tending to her daily house chores, then as they grew
Summer time was truly a favorite time of year. The car would be packed and the children would all hop in, and off they would go! Hampton Beach was always a favorite destination, as well as their cottage on The Cape.
At home, on vacation or even shopping, no matter where she was, people were drawn to her. A friendly woman by nature, Gertrude could start or respond to people, a conversation would start and by the end, some would have given her their life story! She truly enjoyed meeting new people and always made the time to listen.
Gertrude loved to travel and all the adventures that came with it. Nooks, crannies and corners where all discovered and covered as she traveled to places such as Ireland, Hawaii, Jamaica, and throughout South America.
Reading was her passion. Any genre, any time, and anywhere, she always enjoyed a good book. Gertrude throughout her life could be found with her nose in a book, standing or seated. Sadly in later years she began to lose her vision. Gertrude then became involved with the Perkins Low Vision Group and once again was able to enjoy her books.
Gertrude will always be remembered as a compassionate, quick witted, fun loving, and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that could give a good eyebrow if needed followed by a terrific hug!
Gertrude was predeceased by her beloved husband John.

Gert was my mother’s best friend in florida. My mom, Ruth Todd, passed away in 2014 but loved spending time with Gert, going places, laughing together. They just seemed to click.I’m so very sorry to hear that Gert passed away. Please accept my sympathies and wishes for peace in your grieving. Claudia Welbourne
