OBITUARY
Rose Elena (Sturniolo) Fiumara of Woburn passed away suddenly at Winchester Hospital on Saturday, April 23, 2016. She was 94 years old.
Rose was born in East Boston, the middle child and only daughter of Charlie and Mamie (Nuzzo) Sturniolo. She went to East Boston High and left before completion in order to help support her family, as a dress finisher at Fords Lingerie. There she met the man she would marry, Matthew Fiumara. After Matty finished his service in the US Infantry Third Division during World War II, they were married at St. Marys Star of the Sea Church. After the birth of their first daughter, Lorraine, they moved to Winthrop where they would raise her and their second daughter, Dianne, and live for the rest of their married life.
Once the girls were school age, Rose worked at a variety of local businesses, with the agreement she would be home in time for the girls. She retired from clerical work at the National Shawmut Bank of Boston in 1986.
Rose and Matty were charter members of the Order Sons of Italy Winthrop Ladies and Mens Lodges and subsequently the Winthrop Mixed Lodge.
Rose was an avid cook and homemaker and in her spare time she enjoyed Knitting Club and cake decorating classes with her many friends. She volunteered with local Girl Scouts, St. Johns Missilettes Drill Team and was very active with both the Winthrop and Woburn Senior Centers after her retirement. She also loved attending the many recitals, ice skating shows, soccer and softball games of her great-grandchildren.
In 2004, Rose sold the family home in Winthrop and moved closer to her daughter, Lorraine (Fiumara) Cogan and family in Woburn. Last year, she moved to New Horizons.
In addition to Lorraine and husband Robert Cogan, she is survived by daughter Dianne Fiumara of Washington, DC; grandchildren Valerie Cogan and Meredith (Cogan) Olson and husband Don; and great-grandchildren Sophia, Jenna, Matthew, and Madison. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, loving cousins and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Matthew J. Fiumara and brothers Lt. Col. James C. Sturniolo and Bernard J. Sturniolo.
