OBITUARY:
Jeanne (Ledwell) Conti, a longtime resident of Central Square, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 25th after a brief illness. The beloved wife of Vincent J. Conti, she was eighty-four years of age.
Born in West Roxbury, Jeanne was the only daughter of the late Percival and Alice (Raynes) Ledwell. She was raised in West Roxbury and was a graduate of Roslindale High School. In 1948, Jeanne married her beloved husband of sixty-three years, Vincent, whom she had the good fortune of meeting on a blind date. They first resided in Brighton while Vincent was attending Boston University after having served during World War II. They soon began a family and were blessed with three sons. When the boys were young, the family took road trips during the summer months to destinations such as the New York World’s Fair, Washington D.C. and every place in between. Jeanne remained at home to devote herself to raising the boys. Although a disciplinarian, she was a kind and affectionate mother who had great faith in her children. In 1960, the Conti family made Woburn their home.
Once the boys were of middle school age, Jeanne decided to return to work on a part time basis. She secured a position as a receptionist at S.S. Pierce and soon became secretary to the CEO of the company. She truly loved her job and was loved by all those within the company.
Throughout her life, Jeanne enjoyed traveling and she and her husband traveled south to New Orleans, Nashville, one of her favorite destinations, Florida and north to Maine and Canada. After Vincent’s retirement, they spent much of the winter in Key West. During the later years, they also had the great joy of being grandparents to nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jeanne had many talents, one of which was baking wedding cakes which she made for family and friends. Her decorative touches included detailed flowers and color variations and, regardless of the time involved, she never accepted any money for them. Jeanne also had a passion for knitting and made afghans, sweaters, baby clothes and other types of clothing. She donated her goods to craft fairs, knitted hats for cancer patients, orphans in Kenya and all her family members.
Jeanne will best be remembered as a beautiful woman, physically and spiritually. Throughout her life she maintained many wonderful friendsships and never had a bad word about anyone. As in her high school year book “Jeanne’s pretty to walk with, witty to talk with and always so pleasant to be with.”
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Vincent J. Conti, her sons, John V. Conti of Woburn, Rick D. Conti and his wife Jane of Chelmsford, and David L. Conti and his wife Kate of Boylston, her brother, William Ledwell and his wife Virginia of Chelmsford, and her nine cherished grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a service in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Friday, October 28th at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
Calling hours will be held from 9 to 10:50 a.m. Friday morning, prior to the service.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Conti’s memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 101 First Avenue, Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451.
I’m her son John. I miss her terribly. She was the best friend I ever had in this life!
