OBITUARY:
Frederick J. Swymer, 81, of Woburn passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, March 22nd, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Jackqueline (Goss) Swymer for nearly fifty-four years.
Born and raised in Winchester, he was the son of the late John and Anna (Burke) Swymer. He graduated from Winchester High School with the class of 1948. Fred and his wife Jackqueline, whom he married in 1957, took up residence on Woburn’s West Side in 1962, where they raised their five children.
He began working as a sales engineer for Unitrode Corporation, a manufacturer of electronic components, in 1966 and retired as a marketing director in 1998.
His family was most important in his life. In earlier years he coached Woburn Youth Hockey and was involved in all his children’s school and athletic activities. Every summer the family would pack up and spend several weeks at Hampton Beach. In his leisure time, Fred enjoyed being at home and puttering around the house. Lovingly known as “Bampie,” he always looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren, often taking them out for ice cream.
He was sadly preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Fred Swymer, and his sister, Helen Colliander and her husband Ralph.
Surviving along with his wife Jackqueline are five children: Suzanne Tobin and her husband Paul, and Mark Swymer and his wife Gail, all of Woburn, Karen Hodge and her husband William of S. Hampton, NH, John Swymer and his companion Mette Jepsen of Denmark, and James “Jay” Swymer and his wife Christa of Concord, NH; a brother, Robert “Sonny” Swymer and his wife Mae of Winchester and a sister, Judith Duke and her husband Fred of Salem, NH. He was the cherished grandfather of Ryan, Michael, Andrew, Brianna, Daniel, Mollie, and John Tobin, Mark Swymer, Kristen and Kathleen Hodge, and Madelaine Swymer. Also surviving are several loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Thursday, March 24th, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Donations may be made in Fred’s memory to Fred’s Fund, 27 Rundlett Street, Concord, NH 03301 (fredsfund.org, a charity formed in memory of his late grandson to benefit the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth in providing support for families during a child’s medical crisis).
Jacky, we never met but Fred spoke of you and the kids so often when we shared an office at Unitrode. At that time, in 1969, I had just come from Canada to work with Unitrode, both of us under Don T. Fred was a joy to work with and I did think of him often over the years and on a whim did a search for him on the Internet today. Sorry to have found him too late. I particularly remember his story about the time he put the garbage out in the concrete holder in the back yard and ended up getting sprayed by a skunk.
I will say a prayer for him in Mass on Sunday.
Sincerely,
Bernie MacDonald
So sorry to hear about Freddie’s passing. Our thoughts are with all of you.

I was so saddened to hear that Freddy had passed. He was always very loving and funny to me. I spent so many days and nights at Grampa and Nana Swymer’s house when I was a kid that I got to be with Freddy a lot. He was such a big part of growing up and helping establish my wonderful memeories of the past. He will be missed. Rest in Peace Uncle Fred and say Hi to all of our family you meet in your next life. Love you. Linda
I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Fred’s passing. Growing up, the Swymer household was such a big part of my life and I hold those memories, very fondly. I am so sorry for your loss, and wish you all peace and comfort during this very difficult time.
