OBITUARY:
Thomas W. Cogan, a lifelong Winchester resident, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on Monday evening, March 7th. The beloved husband of Barbara T. (White) Cogan for the past fifty-four years, he was eighty-two years of age.
Born in Winchester, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Helen (Shea) Cogan. He graduated from Winchester High School with the Class of 1946 and entered the US Army following his graduation. A veteran of both World War II and Korea, he served in the US Army in Japan during the occupation and in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He attended technical school and worked for a private contractor and a foundry in Everett before going to work for Sylvania, where he remained for twenty years before retiring at the age of sixty-one.
Tom was devoted to his family, and was a beloved “Papa” to his grandchildren. He loved watching them participate in school activities, sports, and concerts. An avid Red Sox and football fan, he never missed an opportunity to attend a game, either professional or local, even if he didn’t know the players. Memorable family trips were taken to Baltimore and Toronto to watch the Red Sox play. He and his wife Barbara were fortunate to be able to take many cruises over the years, the most recent being after the holidays this year.
He was also an avid golfer and was a familiar figure at the Unicorn Golf Course in Stoneham, where he often played five days a week. Tom was a Past Commander of the VFW in Winchester and volunteered with Bingo at the Immaculate Conception Church in Winchester in earlier years.
Preceding him in death were a son Kevin, who died in 1992, and two brothers, James “Nonnie” and Charles “Chuggie” Cogan.
Surviving along with his beloved wife Barbara are three children, Stephen T. Cogan and his wife Jane of Virginia Beach, VA, Kerry J. Holloran and her husband Thomas, and Kathleen M. Marx and her husband James, all of Woburn, and his sister, Anne Feeney of Winchester. He also leaves seven cherished grandchildren, Stephen T., Jr. and Aubrey Cogan, Thomas III, Meaghan, and John Holloran, and Philip and Erin Marx, and two stepgrandchildren, Ryan and Alex David.
The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, March 12th, at 11:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m.
