Samuel R. “Sam” “Tucker” Marciano, a lifelong and proud resident of Woburn, died peacefully surrounded by his family on September 21st, at the age of 90.
Born and raised in Woburn, Sam’s love for his hometown ran deep. He was truly black and orange through and through, and over the course of his life became a familiar and beloved face throughout the city.
In his younger years, Sam was a talented and enthusiastic athlete. He enjoyed playing basketball at the YMCA and fast-pitch softball, beginning a lifelong love of sports that would remain an important part of his life. Sam was also an avid candlepin bowler and participated in many leagues at the Woburn Bowladrome. Over the years, his skill earned him numerous trophies and awards, many of which he proudly treasured.
Sam spent an incredible 63 years working in maintenance for the City of Woburn, a job he genuinely loved and took tremendous pride in. Even after retirement, he continued working part-time for the Department of Public Works. Whether he was painting, running the Zamboni, lining Woburn’s many fields, or simply doing whatever needed to be done, Sam worked hard and took pride in doing things right. To many, he became something of a Woburn icon — someone whose dedication to his city was simply part of who he was.
Sam’s commitment to Woburn extended far beyond his work. For more than 20 years, he coached in the women’s fast-pitch softball league, giving his time generously and forming countless friendships along the way. He rarely missed a game, gathering, holiday, or community activity. Sam was always on the go, always involved, and happiest when surrounded by people.
As proud as Sam was of Woburn and his work, nothing came before his family. Family was always number one. He was a devoted husband who deeply loved his wife, Ellie, and a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. One of Sam’s greatest joys in life was simply spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Being together with them brought him tremendous happiness, and the memories they shared were among his most treasured. He also loved being a “second dad” to so many throughout the years. His generous nature made people feel welcomed, cared for, and part of the family.
Sam enjoyed the simple things in life — holidays, family gatherings, staying busy, sharing a laugh, and being with the people he loved. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a generous heart, and a way of making friends wherever he went. He was a hardworking man who never needed much fanfare; his life spoke for itself through the family he cherished, the friendships he built, and the community he faithfully served for so many years.
Sam leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the city he loved so dearly. For those who knew him, the black and orange, the many fields he so faithfully cared for, and so many familiar corners of Woburn will forever carry a little reminder of Sam Marciano.
Along with his late wife of sixty-five years, Eleanor M. “Ellie” (Barrucci) Marciano, Sam is lovingly survived by his children, Diane M. Ivester, her husband Donald, of Woburn, Paul Marciano, his wife Polina, of Woburn, and Maryann Gately, her longtime partner Michael Zelandi, of Woburn. Dear brother of Joseph Marciano and his late wife Linda, of ME, Mary Marciano of NH, and the late Michael Marciano and his late wife Mary, Anthony Marciano and his late wife Jane, Robert Marciano and his late wife Jeanne, and Debbie Marciano. Cherished grandfather of Casey Ivester, his companion Jayce Gifford, Craig Marciano and his fiancée Deana Miele, Jerry Gately III and his wife Naboth, Sam Gately, Jacqueline Gately, Adam Gately and his wife Jordyn, and Olivia Gately, her companion Joe Panetta. Loving great-grandfather of Gianni, Aria-Rose, Saint Adrian, and Ella. Sam is also affectionately survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
