MATTHEW J. DRISCOLL, of Woburn, passed away on January 13, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 15.

Born in Boston and raised in Woburn, Matthew was the cherished son of Chad and Eve (Lawlor) Driscoll of Woburn. He was a treasured and loving big brother to Sarah and Rory, who meant the world to him.

Matthew attended grammar school at St. Raphael School in Medford and was in his sophomore year at Arlington Catholic High School. He was proud to be part of the Arlington Catholic community and was known as an accomplished, dedicated student and loyal friend.

Matthew was strong, brave, and quietly resilient. He rarely shared the full extent of his illness and chose to live fully and focus on the things he loved. An avid athlete, Matthew grew up playing sports in Woburn, including soccer, baseball, golf and lacrosse. Matthew’s biggest passion was hockey. He learned to play hockey in Woburn’s City League and represented Woburn as a Mite and continued through Bantam level. He also enjoyed volunteering with the Challenger program, helping others to learn and love the sport that brought him so much happiness. In addition to playing for the city of Woburn, Matthew also played for the North Shore Shamrocks hockey program. He was a committed teammate who brought energy, effort, and kindness wherever he went. Matthew was a three-sport athlete at Arlington Catholic, playing soccer, hockey and baseball while also being an Honors student. Despite actively battling cancer for nearly three years, Matthew was able to continue competing and participating in all activities until just a few weeks ago. This reflects the determination and heart that defined Matthew throughout his life.

Matthew was incredibly responsible and hardworking, even from a young age. Matthew’s first official job was a daily paper route in Woburn, a job he took seriously and carried out with dedication and pride. Neighbors often saw him riding his bike or rollerblades to deliver papers in the afternoons, sometimes wearing his baseball uniform if it was game day. At home Matthew was dedicated to mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and many other projects. For the past 11 years, Matthew helped build & maintain the family’s backyard rink. Skating on the backyard rink with his sisters was one of Matthew’s favorite things to do. He spent hours practicing shots and moves and loved the pick-up style games with his friends and sisters that continued into the moonlight. Among family, Matthew was also known for baking his favorite cookies – snickerdoodles – and had perfected his late Nana’s braided cardamom bread recipe. Recently Confirmed, Matthew’s faith was an important part of who he was, and it gave him strength, comfort, and courage throughout his journey.

Matthew was the beloved grandson of Joseph Lawlor of Arlington and the late Susan Lawlor, and the late John and Mary Driscoll of North Andover. He was the loving nephew of Ryan Lawlor and his wife Allison of Medford; Alison Russell and her husband Kevin of Arlington; Beth Blanchard and her husband Dave of Bradford, MA; Dan Driscoll and his wife Rina of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Brian Driscoll and his wife Jackie of Derry, NH; Ken Driscoll and his wife Cathy of St. Petersburg, Florida; and the late John Driscoll and his wife Ellen of Methuen. He is also survived by many loving cousins, friends, and teammates.

Matthew will also be deeply missed by his beloved dog, Shamrock, his constant companion.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Raphael Church, 512 High Street, Medford, on Thursday, January 22, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to calling hours on Wednesday, January 21, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matthew’s memory to the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The family also encourages those who are able to consider donating blood or platelets, as these life-saving gifts are always in critical need for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

  30. Matthew faced cancer with incredible strength, determination, and quiet courage, choosing to live life fully and normally even while carrying a burden that so many were unaware of.

He was kind to everyone and always humble — the kind of young man every parent hopes their child will grow up to be and every parent would be grateful to have as a friend to their children.

He was very close to my sons, Steven and Matthew, and they will miss him deeply.

Chad, Eve, Sarah, and Rory – Our hearts are with you during this unimaginable loss. Matthew’s strength, character, and kindness will never be forgotten.

    Forever in our hearts,

  40. I had the privilege of having Matt as my student when I was principal at St. Raphael Parish School. Always smiling, his gentle demeanor made him a role model for his classmates and the epitome of what a student should be. I had the pleasure of chaperoning class trips to New York and DC as well as many Middle School events. I watched him graduate from St. Ray’s and move on to high school where he continued to demonstrated kindness and respect to all—in the classroom and on the ice. It was an honor to serve as your principal. May your soul rest in peace and have everlasting joy in Heaven. God Bless
