Kathleen A. (Collins) Hackett passed away Thursday, February 15th after a lingering illness.  The beloved wife of the late Thomas A. Hackett, Kathy was seventy six years of age.

Born in Everett, Kathy was one of seven children born to the late John T. and Rita (Deegan) Collins.  Raised in Winchester, Kathy attended Winchester Schools and was a graduate of Winchester High School, Class of 1965.

Following high school Kathy went on to study Nursing.  She had graduated from Addison Gilbert Hospital with her LPN, continuing on to Mass Bay Community College, where she received her R.N.

In the mid-seventies Kathy, being an avid skier throughout her childhood, took a ski trip to Idaho, at Sun Valley.  It was here that she met her lifetime partner and future husband, Tom Hackett.  In 1977 they married, (Kathy had hand sewn her own wedding dress) moved to California, and began working at a hospital there.

Ten years later they moved back to be closer to their families, making their home in Hopkington, NH.  Kathy continued in the medical profession having worked at Cambridge City Hospital, New England Deaconess Hospital, and Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

In 2003, they then decided it would be somewhat warmer going south and moved to Ellenboro, North Carolina.

All throughout the years Kathy enjoyed being active.  She could often be found on the golf course on a day off, or volunteering at animal shelters, to assist with daily routines of the animals.

For over ten years she had been quite active at Paws of Rutherford, where Kathy tirelessly and selflessly worked for the betterment of these animals.  She had worked as the Transport Coordinator for Spay/Neuter, Doghouse Coordinator, Special Events Volunteer and most importantly Secretary of the PAWS Board.

Kathy was an incredible, award-winning quilter!  She had handcrafted one beautiful masterpiece for a PAWS Auction, entitled “Muchas Puchas.”

An extraordinary person, Kathy loved life, loved people and loved animals, as shown through each day she lived, helping wherever and whenever she could, making the world a better place.

In addition to her parents, Kathleen was predeceased by her dear sister “Cal”  Friel.

I was saddened and sorry to hear of Kathy’s passing. As a cousin, I have special and fond memories of spending time with the Collins family growing up. I remember playing hide and go seek in their back yard, family gatherings, summer picnics, swimming and having lots of fun together. Kathy and Family are in my thoughts and prayers. Sending love at this difficult time.

  4. I was fortunate enough to be a small part of Kathy’s life as one of her quilting students turned into a special friendship. I came to love her for many things, not the least her compassion for animals and willingness to help no matter what. I will always remember her in all the beautiful quilts I’ve made and continue to make. Rev 21:4 promises no more tears pain sickness suffering or even the enemy death. I look forward to seeing you again Kathy. Love you dearly my dear friend

  10. Kathy was the sweetest person ever! Had such great times with my dad Tom … skiing (which is how they met), camping, golfing, enjoying their rural lifestyle. And what a sense of adventure! Search for “Kathy Paragliding Torrey Pines” on YouTube for just one example. She was a talented, award- winning artist, too. Always sunny and loveable.

  11. Brenda Paternostro
