JACK H. IRWIN – a longtime resident of Woburn, died peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, November 6th at the age of ninety-four. He was the beloved husband of Janet A. (Chapman) Irwin for 68 years.

Born in Arlington, Jack was the youngest son of the late Richard and Anna (Tornrose) Irwin. He was raised in Winchester and grew up on the Irwin Farm. He was a graduate of Winchester High School. In 1949, Jack enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where he served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. He earned the Sharp Shooter Medal during his service. He offered to go overseas but was denied as he was considered “Essential Personnel” as a Supply Sergeant. He was the oldest living Marine in Woburn.

In 1955, Jack married the love of his life, Janet Chapman. Together they raised their five children in the house that Jack built one brick at a time. He made his growing family the center of his life and he enjoyed nothing more than traveling with and spending time with his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. He adored his great grandchildren.

Jack was a talented, self-employed Masonry Contractor. He was a hard-working, skilled craftsman specializing in chimneys, stairs, foundations, rock walls, and brick work. He enjoyed the challenge of fixing things and was adamant about doing it the right way, the Jack way. He worked until the age of 87, when a knee replacement sidelined his career.

Jack loved to talk about sports. He enjoyed watching all the Boston Teams. He was a collector of everything, including friends. Jack will be remembered for his larger than life presence, great sense of humor, beautiful smile and strong, determined personality. He loved his “Coffee Guys” and all his friends at the Winchester Cooperative Bank. You were never left wondering what Jack thought about anything. He was able to engage people constantly. He loved putting smiles on other people’s faces, even at the price of being obnoxious at times.

In addition to his wife Janet, Jack is survived by his daughter, Kathi Irwin of Burlington, and his sons, John (Jack) Irwin, his wife Dawn of Peabody, Scott Irwin of Burlington, and Brian Irwin of Lempster, NH. He was predeceased by his son, David Irwin (1995). Treasured grandfather of Michael Archibald and Michelle Pohero, Amy Archibald and her husband, Ahn Phoung, Lauren Archibald and Kandal Thang, John Irwin, Christine and Rob Marino, Billy and Jamie Irwin, Benjamin Irwin, Christopher Irwin and his fiance, Alliy Sellman, Giovanne and Becky Martins, Liela and David Irwin, and many great-grandchildren. Dear brother of the late Richard Irwin, Grace Maloney, and Charlotte Smith. He had a very special relationship with his nephew, Kenny Irwin. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

  6. Jack was a true blue friend of everyone who knew him. I met Jack through a mutual friend. Immediately enjoyed listening to his many stories. Such a kind and caring gentleman. Will miss you, Jack. Such a goft to know him. May he rest in peace. My condolences to his family he loved so much.

  7. So sorry for you loss. I knew David, Scott and Brian from my bartending days at the 99. I met Jack at the Winchester Co-op years later. He entertained the group on Saturday mornings at the round table-what a character! He was one of the last of many to pass. He has “the book” to document the many members of the group and the times we shared there. He may be gone but will never be forgotten! He will be greatly missed–the table hasn’t been the same without him!

  8. I am truly saddened but so glad we had such a nice working relationship all those years. Wilda Ward
