Margaret A. “Peggy” (Holzman) Russo passed away at her home Friday evening, October 27th, with her family by her side.  The beloved wife of the late John M. “Jack” Russo, she was ninety years of age.

Born in Boston, she was the oldest child of the late Arthur and Gertrude (Lynch) Holzman.  Dorchester was where Peggy grew up along with her six siblings.  She was educated through the parochial school system and was a graduate of Girls Latin High School.  Furthering her education after High School, Peggy pursued her degree from Boston State College, in Elementary Education.

Peggy served as a Counsellor over at the Winning Farm, in Woburn.  It served as a camp for children from Boston and gave them the opportunity to spend time in the “country” during the summer months.  It was there that she met a gentleman, Jack, who was the “handy man” around Winning Farm.

They married in 1957, brought six children into the world and were totally devoted to each. Each summer throughout there “growing up years,” right up to present, they enjoyed spending time at their home in Maine.  It was a place that not only the children loved but the grandchildren and great grandchildren enjoyed as well!  It was a place that is still cherished by them all. They also enjoyed traveling all around, camping and family vacations at Disney.

Peggy began teaching for several years prior to her marriage in Lexington and after her family was all in school, she returned to teaching.  Her return was to the Woburn Public Schools, where she spent over the next twenty some odd years at the Wyman Elementary School.  Peggy truly loved being a teacher and the students truly loved being her students!  Her kind, gentle, and warm approach to each student, always brought the best out of them and learning with Mrs. Russo was fun and plentiful!

When Peggy found some quiet time, she would enjoy picking up a pencil and paper and sketching!  Her sketches were remarkable, and never did she use any other medium other than a pencil and they were beautiful! Reading, crossword puzzles, and planning the next family trip was always fun!

Peggy’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her world.  She loved to visit with them, go out for ice cream, cheer them on at sporting events, trips, and even attended some of their weddings!  They were all very, very dear to her and the center of her world.

Sadly, Peggy was predeceased by her husband Jack, her son Danny, son-in-law Steven Dodge, brother in laws, Jake McLaughlin, Robert O’Reilly, and James Reggio.

Peggy is survived and will be deeply missed by her children, John Russo, his wife Donna of Billerica, Susan Dodge, her husband, the late Steven, of Billerica, David Russo, his wife Kathleen of Burlington, Margie Mannke, her husband Edward of China, ME, Tracey Russo, her late husband Danny of Woburn and Timmy Russo, his wife Keley of Lunenburg, MA. Cherished grandmother of 15 beautiful grandchildren and 16 treasured great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Mary O’Reilly, her late husband Robert of Weymouth, Jack Holzman, his wife Barbara of Braintree, Ellen Reggio, her late husband James of Pembroke, Arthur Holzman, his wife Joan of Hanson, Jean Flight, her husband Harry of Pembroke, and James Holzman, his wife Eileen of Plymouth. Also survived by her brother-in-law, Frank Russo, and sister-in-law, Beverly McLaughlin, as well as many loving nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

  3. One of my favorite memories of Peggy was when visiting her and Jack. In the beginning stages of her Alzheimers Disease, I would go to their house to massage Jack, to help with his circulation. Each time Peggy and I would have the same introduction and conversation. She always voiced her concerned and felt bad for me because I was there to “touch” her husband. Her and I would laugh after I told her it’s only because he was paying me. She would then sit and watch, sometimes asking if she should help.

  4. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Russo and Holzman families. Peg was a wonderful lady who we will remember fondly, especially from our times together with she and Jack in Maine. Our love and prayers are with you. Bob and Peggy Mahar and family.
