JOSEPH J. “JOE” SULLIVAN – a lifelong resident of Woburn, died peacefully, May 2nd at the age of eighty-two. Beloved husband of nearly 53 years to Patricia A. (Varnum) Sullivan. Proud father of Amy Gatchell, her husband Scott of Woburn and Kathleen Larkin, her husband John of Tewksbury. Treasured grandfather of Thomas, Julie, Quinn and Gavin. Dear brother of the late Mary McElhiney, her late husband Leo and loving uncle of Dennis McElhiney and the late John McElhiney. Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, May 8th at 12 noon in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn. Interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Winchester. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects prior to the Mass, from 10:30-11:45 a.m. in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home 263 Main St., Woburn, MA 01801. Donations may be made in Joe’s memory to La Salette Missionaries, Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas 947 Park St. – Attleboro MA, 02703 or to a charity of one’s choice.

JOSEPH J. “JOE” SULLIVAN – a lifelong resident of Woburn, died peacefully, May 2nd at the age of eighty-two. He was the beloved husband of nearly 53 years to Patricia A. (Varnum) Sullivan.

Born and raised in Woburn, Joe was a son of the late John J. and Martha (Stanley) Sullivan. He was a graduate of Woburn High School, class of 1959. During that time, he was a talented athlete, having been a member of the High School basketball team, cross country team and co-captain of the golf team,

In 1963, Joe enlisted in the US Navy, where he served on the USS Saratoga. He was honorably discharged in 1969 and a proud veteran. Upon his return from service, Joe started a career with Polaroid that spanned over many years.

In 1970, Joe married the love of his life, Patricia Varnum. Together they made their home in Woburn where they raised their two daughters, to whom they were devoted. Throughout the years they made many happy memories with their children, cherished grandchildren, friends, and family. They enjoyed taking trips together, especially to places like Ireland and Italy.

Joe was an avid foodie and loved a nice meal out with his wife and family He was also an avid Red Sox fan, golfer and enjoyed fishing. Most of all he was a generous and loving family man who was funny, kind and welcoming to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In addition to his wife Pat, Joe is survived by his two daughters, Amy Gatchell, her husband Scott of Woburn and Kathleen Larkin, her husband John of Tewksbury. Treasured grandfather of Thomas, Julie, Quinn and Gavin. Dear brother of the late Mary McElhiney, her late husband Leo and loving uncle of Dennis McElhiney and the late John McElhiney.

    Joe was a kind, funny and great guy, who was loved by all he knew. My funniest memory is when he dressed as a ballerina for my Halloween party.
