Ruth G. (Delaney) McCarron – Of Woburn, died peacefully, May 2nd at the age of eighty-seven. She was the beloved wife of 52 years to the late John P. “Jack” McCarron.

Born and raised in Newton, Ruth was the daughter of the late John A. and Mary R. (Greeley) Delaney. She was educated in Newton and graduated from Rosary Academy High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Framingham State College and later received a master’s degree from Northeastern University.

Upon graduating from college, Ruth started her teaching career. For over 40 years, with time out for raising a family, Ruth worked as a teacher for the Woburn Public School system at both the elementary and high school levels. A born educator, she dedicated her life to enriching the lives of her students. An avid tennis player herself, Ruth had the privilege of coaching the Woburn High School girls Tennis team for many years. Even after retiring, she served as a mentor, helping adults learn English as a second language. A lifelong learner, Ruth took many courses for her own edification, including diverse topics like architecture and Italian.

In 1960, Ruth married the love of her life, Jack, and they spent fifty-two wonderful years together. They were devoted to their four children. Ruth enjoyed nothing more than spending time with family, hosting game nights and holiday dinners. She proudly watched all four children follow their father’s lead and graduate from Northeastern University. Proud of her Irish heritage, she traveled to Ireland several times with family and friends to visit relatives and tour the country.

Ruth was a very sociable woman with a wonderful sense of humor and many lifelong friends. She enjoyed good food, a glass of wine, and lively conversation. She was a wealth of knowledge on topics from classic movies to professional tennis to politics, and everyone knew not to call her while Jeopardy was on!  Since the early 70’s, her summers were spent in Seabrook, New Hampshire, where family and friends gathered to enjoy beautiful days at the beach and gorgeous sunsets on the deck. She took up golf and played frequently with friends. A voracious reader, she stocked the summer house with books and magazines, and spent many hours reading for pleasure. Ruth shared her love of reading back home in Woburn as a founding member of several book clubs.

A resident of Woburn for 43 years, and still considered a “carpetbagger” by some, Ruth gave back to her community in many ways, including as a member of the Lions Club and the Woburn Historical Society. A practicing Catholic throughout her life, she was a parishioner at St. Barbara church, and taught CCD there for many years.

Ruth was sadly predeceased by her husband Jack in 2012 and now is fondly remembered by children, Bruce M. McCarron, his wife Elizabeth C., Gail A. O’Donnell, her husband Thomas, all of Reading, Brian D. McCarron, his wife Rita I. of Billerica and Jennifer G. McCarron of Woburn. Dear sister of the late Clement and Warren Delaney, and sister-in-law of Patricia McCarron of Mashpee. Cherished grandmother of Conor, Garrett, Mary Kate and Neil McCarron, Colin, John and Liam O’Donnell. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, and her dear and lifelong friends, the Kendall’s.
