Myrtle I. (Couture) Peary – of Woburn, formerly of Lowell, died peacefully, January 20th at the age of ninety-two. She was the beloved wife of 68 years to the late Robert E. “Bob” Peary, Retired Chief of the Woburn Fire Department.

Born and raised in Lowell, Myrtle was a daughter of the late Ralph and Myrtle (Wilson) Couture. She attended St. Michaels School and graduated from Lowell High School.

While attending the Barn dances in Billerica, Myrtle was introduced to a young soldier, Bob Peary.  They quickly fell in love and after marrying settled in Woburn where they started and raised their family. She was a proud, devoted, strong and loving mother who dedicated her life to her family.

In the summers and for over 25 years, they enjoyed vacationing at Hampton Beach with all of the extended family members and always had a ball!  Cookouts, swimming, casino’s, walks on the beach, they truly were adventures, each time! They also had a wonderful group of friends in addition to their family that they would travel with.  They visited places such as New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and Hawaii to name a few.

For many years, Myrtle was very active in the Woburn Boosters and was also a volunteer with the Choate Hospital Aid Association.  Myrtle was the smiling face greeting all patients and visitors at the Information Center at the Choate Hospital until it closed in 1990.  She later became a regular substitute teacher at the Northeast Metro Tech Vocational High School in Wakefield.  For over 10 years the high schoolers looked forward to “Grandma Peary” covering their class.

She was a gentle and loving woman with a strong faith who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her children, Robert E. Peary Jr., his wife Barbara, Susan Haney, her late husband David, David Peary, his wife Donna and James Peary. Devoted grandmother of Rachel Haney, the late Cheryl Haney Lombardo, her husband Frank, the late Jason Peary, and Rachel Joudrey, her husband Erik. Treasured great-grandmother of Annmarie Haney, Mackenzie Lombardo, Ember and Scarlett Joudrey. Dear sister of the late Lois Morehead. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
