Richard E. Hayes – of Woburn, died peacefully, Friday, July 29th, at the age of eighty-six. Beloved husband of 52 years to the late Barbara A. (Narkiewich) Hayes. Cherished father of Barbara Pappas, her husband Nick of Wilmington and the late Andrew Hayes. Devoted grandfather of Niko and Max Pappas of Wilmington. Also survived by his brother, Robert Hayes, his wife Patricia of FL, and sister Susanna Clancy of Pelham, NH and her children, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members. Relatives and close friends are invited to celebrate Richard’s life with the family on Saturday, August 13th at 5 p.m. at the Woburn Country Club 6 Country Club Rd.,Woburn.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to The Home for Little Wanders 10 Guest St., Boston, MA 02135.  Arrangements are under the direction of Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, MA 01801

Richard E. Hayes – a longtime resident of Woburn, died peacefully, Friday, July 29th, at the age of eighty-six. He was the beloved husband of 52 years to Barbara A. (Narkiewich) Hayes. 

Born in Boston, Richard was a son of the late Margaret (Coughlan) Hayes. He lived his early life in the Roxbury and Dorchester sections of the city and was a graduate of Woburn High School, class of 1953.

For many years, Richard worked as an electrical engineer for Raytheon, with his career starting at Sylvania on military electronics contracts.  During his 40 year career as an engineer,  Richard traveled through work to Italy,  UK,  India, and Saudi Arabia.   Richard also had a successful side business creating and selling woodworking patterns, Hayes Patterns.

Richard met his future bride Barbara and married in 1966. They were devoted to their family raised them in Woburn.

As a family, they enjoyed many trips to Disney, as well as vacations on Plum Island and various road trips to Nova Scotia, North Carolina, and Niagara Falls.   

After retirement, Richard kept busy as a member of the Towanda Club and the Elks,  playing pool and helping win many competitions, being awarded Top Performer in 2004 and 2007.    He also enjoyed radio controlled aircraft flying and hobby construction with his brother  and many friends.

Cherished father of Barbara Pappas, her husband Nick of Wilmington and the late Andrew Hayes. Devoted grandfather of Niko and Max Pappas of Wilmington. Also survived by his brother, Robert Hayes, his wife Patricia of FL, and sister Susanna Clancy of Pelham, NH and her children, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members, including Clara and Ray Watson of ME,  and Edward Henry of VT.   The family would wish to thank the Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading for their exemplary care at the end of Richard’s life.

  1. Barbara and the Hayes family; Very sorry to hear the sad news of Dick’s passing. I was fortunate to have been a teammate of his in pool league and played many games at the Moose. He was always a gentleman and a caring and generous man. I was honored to call him a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very sad time. Sincerely, Bobby C
