Ellen (O’Brien) McCarthy – of Woburn, died peacefully, July 11th, two days short of her 88th birthday. She was the beloved wife of 56 years to the late David V. McCarthy.
Born in Cambridge and raised in Boston, Ellen was a daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Carr) O’Brien. She received her High School diploma from Mt. St. Joseph in Boston and earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Boston College with the class of 1957. She later received her master’s degree from Framingham State College.
For over 40 years, Ellen worked as the Title One Administrator for the Woburn Public School System. Her dedication to her students and faculty was admirable. She enriched the lives of numerous students and worked diligently to help them learn.
In 1955, Ellen met the love of her life, David, and married in 1960. After marrying, they ended up settling in the Forest Park section of Woburn, where they raised their family and remained for fifty-four years. Their home was their castle and they enjoyed hosting every family event, from holidays, birthdays, and various celebrations.
As their children grew and they began their families, Ellen loved being with her grandchildren. She along with her husband would take them on picnics to Horn Pond or walk them to and from school. She was her family’s biggest supporter and would do anything for them.
After retirement, Dave and Ellen found a love for travelling. They travelled extensively throughout Europe, France, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Ireland, and many other hidden gems abroad. Their favorite place however was Cape Cod. Always an enjoyable and comfortable place to visit, any time of the year.
Ellen was a strong, loving, caring and smart woman who will never be forgotten and deeply missed.

David, Lucy, and family,
I feel so honored to have been a friend and caregiver to Miss Ellie. Ellie welcomed me into your family with open arms. We had so many warm conservations about her love for you all. I have such admiration for the love she had for her family and for those she loved. May my dear sweet friend rest in peace.
Love always,

Our family was saddened to hear about your mom’s passing away. We were close neighbors for so many years on Rumford Park Avenue. Tons of fun times with Dave and family.
Rest assured, your sadness will turn to happy thoughts of experiences with your parents over time. It has with me. I often laugh to myself about funny scenarios with my dad and mom. And, it feels so good.
Our family and yours were truly blessed to be dropped in to loving and caring homes. And, it certainly shows in the quality of people in your family. You all have such nice personalities.
May Ellen’s memory be eternal. And, this is an opportunity to remember your dad as well.
See you tomorrow morning and throughout the day. In the meantime, all our love and God bless!
Jonathan Paleologos, on behalf of my wife Zulma as well
Ellen, I’m very sorry for your loss.
Grief never ends, but it changes. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love.” – Unknown
