Edward J. “Jack” Maher – a longtime resident of Woburn and Mashpee, died peacefully, January 5th at the age of eighty-eight. He was the beloved husband of 51 years to the late Maureen F. (Conway) Maher and later, the late Eileen A. (Coughlin) Halligan.

Born in Woburn, Jack was the son of the late Denis and Margaret (Taylor) Maher. The oldest of four children, he grew up near Horn Pond and graduated from Woburn Memorial High School in 1952. Following high school, Jack enlisted in the US Navy and served honorably during the Korean Conflict.

Jack returned from the Navy to work with his father at the D.L. Maher Co., New England’s leading water well drilling and pump services company.  In 1980, Jack succeeded his father as president, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. His vision and innovation helped to propel the company’s success.

On June 7th, 1958, Jack married his love, Maureen, and together they made their home in Woburn where they raised their family of six boys. They had many wonderful times as Jack taught his boys the importance of family, faith, work, responsibility and fun.  Jack and his family were deeply committed to supporting the Woburn Boys and Girls Club. He served for many years on the club’s Board of Directors as well as serving a term as President.

In 1968 Jack built their summer home at Popponesset Beach in Mashpee, it would later become their full-time residence. Over the years they hosted many family members, friends and great parties.  He was an avid golfer and an early member at New Seabury Country Club.  Jack and Maureen loved to travel and retirement led them to Scottsdale, AZ, where they spent many winters.  They were blessed with many memorable times and wonderful life-long friends wherever they went.

Jack was an extremely talented and hands-on guy who could do just about anything he set his mind to. He had a wide range of interests, including building and renovating homes, gardening, photography, sketching and painting. His mantra, “if you’re going to do something, do it right,” applied to everything he did, and was often included in the advice he gave.

Jack was the proud father of Kevin, his wife Susanna of North Andover, Robert, his wife Rosemary of Woburn, Brian, his wife Katherine of Milton, Peter, his wife Elizabeth of Winchester, John, his wife Lisa of Wilmington, and David, his wife Lara of Newburyport. Cherished grandfather of 14 and loving great-grandfather of two. Dear brother of Carol Murphy, her late husband Donald of Woburn, Denis L. Maher Jr., his wife Maryellen of Woburn, the late Margaret “Peggy” Gaffney, her husband Mark of Woburn. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, January 22nd at Christ the King Church, 5 Jobs Fishing Rd., Mashpee. Burial is private and a celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
