Denise P. (Martinoli) Gay – of Woburn, passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday October 1st at 76 years of age.

Born in Winthrop and raised in East Boston, Denise was the loving daughter of the late Octavius and Beatrice (Dubay) Martinoli. She was a proud product of catholic schooling, where the nuns always tried to correct her left-handedness, and graduated East Boston High School, Class of 1963.

On an evening out dancing on Newbury Street, a rather handsome young man named Russell Gay was stunned by Denise’s ability to dance “the slop.” He worked up the courage, introduced himself, and asked her to dance. Well, that first dance became a lifetime of more dances to come.

They began their life together in 1965 in Watertown, where they brought two wonderful children, Christine and Russell, into the world.  In 1977, they settled down in Woburn, continuing to raise their family.

Denise devoted herself to her children. She loved watching her daughter excel at gymnastics and screaming from the stands during her son’s hockey games. Later in life, Denise doted on her grandchildren, Ernie and Mckenzie, hand and foot. She’d pamper them with everything from homecooked meals, to ironing, to a car full of pristinely wrapped presents. Some of her most precious memories were spending summers with her family at their campground in Wells, Maine.

Denise’s skill with crafts was unparalleled. She would sew torn jeans, hem long skirts, and knit scarves for the winter. Denise was most famous for gifting intricate afghan blankets to family, friends, and just about anyone with a newborn. Her brilliance and photographic memory complimented her crafts as she would remember any name, birthday, or special date without compare. She truly knew how to make you feel remembered, loved, and special.

In the sunset of her life, Denise cared for her daughter Christine through thick and thin as she battled breast cancer. You would end up on the wrong side of the tracks if you got in between Denise and her cherub. After Christine’s passing, Denise loyally visited the cemetery daily, even walking in several pairs of Christine’s shoes for ten-thousand steps a day just as she promised she would. While losing a fountain of love like Denise is difficult, her loved ones rest easy knowing she is reunited with her daughter once again.
