Richard E. “Dickie” Alger – Of Woburn, died peacefully, September 19th at the age of eighty-six. Beloved husband of nearly 62 years to Dorothy R. (Bradley) Alger. Devoted father of Donna Lennon, her husband Richard of Woburn, Richard Alger Jr., his companion Judy Zagzoug of Tewksbury, Diane Waters, her husband Frank of Chelmsford and Danielle Vella, her husband Scott of Hudson, NH. Cherished “Papa” of Colleen Lennon, her husband Nick Sowa, Meghan Lennon, her longtime companion Angel Alvarado, Kelsey Keller, her husband Robert, Mollie and Caleigh Lennon, Carly and Joey Waters, and Shaylin and Alec Vella.  Adored great-grandfather of Dylan, Cameron, and Josephine. Dear brother of the late Frank, George, Robert and William Alger and Beverly Cantrell. Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.  A Funeral Mass will take place, Friday, September 24th at 10 a.m., at St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn.  Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.  Relatives and friends are briefly invited to pay their respects prior to the Mass from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main St., Woburn.  As an expression of sympathy, those who wish may make donations in Richard’s memory to the Sawtelle Family Hospice House 320 Haverhill St, Reading, MA 01867.

Richard E. “Dickie” Alger – Of Woburn, died peacefully, September 19th at the age of eighty-six. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy R. (Bradley) Alger, with whom he would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on September 26th. 

 Born and raised in Arlington, Dickie was a son of the late Frank and Helen (Sullivan) Alger. He was a graduate of Arlington High School. After graduating, Dickie enlisted in the US Army where he served his country during the Korean Conflict until being honorably discharged.

 For many years, Dickie worked as a truck driver, most notably for his family trucking business, Alger Brothers. After retiring after many years, he continued his love of driving, by driving a school bus. He enjoyed interacting with the children and their families and loved going to work every day.

Dickie’s pride and joy was his yard and he loved tending to it as well as maintaining his garden. He loved the beach, Willie Nelson and was an avid New England Patriots fan. 

Dickie’s family, however, was his whole world. He was a dedicated and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. Dickie will be missed dearly and remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.

 Along with his wife Dorothy, Dickie is survived by his children, Donna Lennon, her husband Richard of Woburn, Richard Alger Jr., his companion Judy Zagzoug of Tewksbury, Diane Waters, her husband Frank of Chelmsford and Danielle Vella, her husband Scott of Hudson, NH. Cherished “Papa” of Colleen Lennon, her husband Nick Sowa, Meghan Lennon, her longtime companion Angel Alvarado, Kelsey Keller, her husband Robert, Mollie and Caleigh Lennon, Carly and Joey Waters, and Shaylin and Alec Vella.  Adored great-grandfather of Dylan, Cameron, and Josephine.   1. My deepest condolences to the Alger and Lennon family. Wishing you peace and strength during this time.

  2. My sincere condolences on the passing of Uncle Dickie. I have many memories of him from family gatherings over the years. Especially when the extended family would spend weeks during the summer together in Vermont. He was full of energy and enjoyed living life in the moment to its fullest. I don’t recall ever seeing him without a smile on his face. He will be missed.
