MEDFORD, MA – Elena (Iantosca) Martignetti passed away peacefully in her home on March 9, 2021 at the age of 87, surrounded by the love of her family.
A native of Montefalcione, Italy, Elena was a loving daughter of the late Carmine and Angela Rosa (Musto) Iantosca, and devoted wife of the late Beniamino Martignetti.

Raised with much love, compassion and caring for others, she cherished life in her small town. As a naturalized citizen, she had an opportunity to come to America at the age of 17. With the intention of staying for only one year, she travelled by ship across the Atlantic Ocean to live with her older brother Joe who had settled in the North End of Boston. She would not return to her homeland again for over 19 years with her husband and children. Independent and strong, with not much more than her courage, faith and fortitude, she began a new life in America far from home with no English language and few resources. Elena worked very hard and quickly established herself as a skilled seamstress and embraced her independence as a young working woman.

In May 1957 at St. Leonard’s Church in the North End, Elena married the love of her life and longtime friend from Montefalcione, Beniamino, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage. They started their married life together on Endicott Street in the North End in an apartment building which they eventually purchased. Together, Elena and Beniamino founded a successful construction company which evolved into the present Martignetti Enterprises, Inc. Their business would provide livelihoods for their family and to many others, including fellow immigrants from Italy. In 1967, Elena and Beniamino moved their family to Medford where they became well-known and respected residents of the St. Joseph’s Parish. Elena’s energy and passion for life were endless.

She was a devoted, kind, and loving mother of seven children: Michelina Mawn, her husband J. Lawrence of Medford, Alessandro Martignetti, the late Carmine Martignetti, Anthony Martignetti of Medford, Rosemarie Hayes, her husband Roscoe, Beniamino Martignetti, Jr., his wife Maria of Chelmsford, and Paul Martignetti, his wife Elizabeth of Lynnfield; and, proud, loving, and caring Nonna to her grandchildren: Maya McDonald, her husband Mitchell, Kayla and Cianna Martignetti, Benjamin and James Mawn, and Beniamino Martignetti, III.

Elena was a tremendous advocate for education. She encouraged her children to pursue higher levels of academics which she believed would provide them with opportunities to achieve a fulfilling and happy life. She and Beniamino sacrificed and worked tirelessly to make this happen.

Elena was a devout Catholic and felt blessed to be an American. Her faith inspired her to contribute to many charitable causes. She had a special affinity for St. Leonard’s and St. Joseph’s Parishes.

She loved to be surrounded by her family and friends… they were everything to her. She was an amazing cook, baker, and homemaker. Her hospitable nature and strong devotion to her family made her home the center of many celebrations and gatherings. All who visited enjoyed food which she lovingly prepared for her family and unexpected guests. Elena greeted everyone with a warm, genuine smile and boundless energy. Anyone who entered the Martignetti home felt welcomed, happy and well-fed.

Despite the devastating effects of Elena’s longtime illness, her beautiful spirit, courage and generosity are forever engrained in our hearts and souls. Until the day she passed away, she was surrounded by the immense love and respect she so rightfully deserved. We extend our sincerest gratitude to her attentive caretakers, Claudia and Miriam, who diligently kept her comfortable and loved.
Elena will be laid to rest in the Oak Grove Cemetery with her husband Beniamino and son Carmine. May she continue to smile upon us and nourish our souls as she rests in peace.

Dear Lina and all the family, Your Mom was always so kind and loving. She was wonderful to me. She was not only a beautiful woman on the outside, but a beautiful woman inside as well. She did a magnificent job in the the most important job of all – that of mother as she and her loving husband “Mr Martignetti”* raised such a wonderful family together. Now they are together again with dear Carmine, in God’s loving arms. I miss them. May God keep you all in the palm of His hand. With my love from your friend, Elaine
    * It is always with respect I called him Mr. Martignetti.
