Ruth (O’Doherty) Doherty passed away at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Thursday evening, October 15th.  The beloved wife of the late Philip Doherty, Ruth was ninety four years of age.

Born in Woburn, Ruth was one of four children born to the late James and Lillian (Spencer) O’Doherty .  Raised and educated in the Central Square section of the City, Ruth was a graduate of Woburn High School along the Class of 1943.

Shortly after high school, Ruth married her long time sweetheart Philip, to whom she was devoted to for sixty four years.  Philip went into the service shortly after they were married and upon his return they lived in Somerville briefly and then to Houghton Street where they have remained through out the years.

They brought seven children into the world, two daughters and five sons!  Needless to say the Doherty household was bustling for years!  They all were each others strongest supporters throughout life.

As the children grew and began families of their own “Gramma” loved being “Gramma!” Her home was the hub of all the festivities, particularly for holidays.  Everyone would gather for Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter.

A special treat through out the years was always present on Saturday afternoons at the Doherty household.  Cheeseburgers were served to all who stopped by!  To every child, grandchild, the mailman, neighbors and friends, Ruth cooked cheeseburgers, ready for all, condiments available and shared great conversation with all.

Ruth and Philip also enjoyed many, many trips to Ireland where they would spend time visiting friends and relatives.  It was very much like their home away from home!

They also thought nothing of hoping into the car and going for a ride!  These rides sometimes took them to Maine for blueberry muffins, or  New Jersey for breakfast!   They enjoyed the journey each and every time.   Traveling was most enjoyable to them both, and there was never a destination too far from home.

York, Maine was always on the agenda for a summer vacation.  Family would all gather for the fun activities of summer.  Many wonderful and happy memories followed.

Ruth could always enjoy a good book when she found time, and genre was not important.  If it caught interest right in the beginning,  she read right through!

Ruth was truly a remarkable woman who lived her great faith each and every day. .  She was always there to pitch in and help out family and friends.  There was never a day in her life that one or more of her children, grandchildren or great grandchildren did not stop by to visit this truly wonderful little lady.  Ruth’s life was full, well lived and she will surely be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Sadly, Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her siblings Charles O’Doherty, Mary Lou Monks , and her beloved husband Philip.

Ruth was the loving mother of James P., his wife Alice, Julia M. Carpenter, her husband Peter, Susan R. Winkle, her husband George, Peter C., his wife Karen, Timothy M., Philip J., Jr., his wife Elaine and Thomas P., his wife Diane, all of Woburn. Mother-in-law of Lori Doherty of Burlington. Dear sister of Phyllis O’Doherty of CT . Also survived by twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and a “special” niece, Cynthia Lynch and her husband Paul.    A Graveside prayer service will take place, Tuesday, October 20th, at Calvary Cemetery in Woburn at 12:45 p.m. Masks MUST be worn at all times, along with strict adherence to social distancing.
