Mary H. (Gill) Gaffney – passed away of natural causes, Monday evening, September 28th, at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading.  Mary was ninety-seven years of age.

Born in Lynn, Mary was one of seven children born to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Gilbride) Gill who were very proud Irish immigrants.  Raised and educated there in Lynn, Mary was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, along with the Class of 1941.

Mary moved to Woburn in the late nineteen forties, where she raised her son and two daughters.  Over the years Mary has been a very dedicated mom, partaking in as many activities with her children as possible and also held down a full-time position as a telephone operator with New England Telephone.

Summer vacation at “Happy Hampton Beach” was always a highlight and wonderful destination over the years for the Gaffney family.

Time moved on, her children married and  Mary very proudly became “Nana” of all her five  grandsons!  They were a wonderful addition to the family!  With all their activities in sports and the world of academia, Nana was only too happy to be a part of it all! Six wonderful grandsons, needless to say kept Nana pretty active.

Mary’s Irish heritage was a significant part of her life, passing it all right along to her children .  They loved to listen to Irish music, any and all of it, particularly Andy Cooney, whom she and her daughters followed wherever he was performing.  A trip to Ireland was truly a highlight for Mary.  She was able to visit where her parents came from and had met quite a few of her relatives.

Mary cherished not just her family but her very dear friends she had over the years.  She and two of her dearest friends would be referred to as the “Golden Girls!”   Often enjoying their lunch or dinner at the Woburn Country Club, which was their favorite.

Mary has lived at fifty-six Campbell St., since 1988, which gave her the “bragging rights” of being the longest resident of that Senior Housing Residence ~ thirty-two years!  There she made her home and also had established some wonderful friendships over the years.

Mary, was throughout her life, a faith-filled woman, very loving, nurturing, kind and a truly “gentle woman.”  Over the last several years Mary had in addition to her family, four very special people in her life who assisted her in whatever it was she needed assistance doing.  Her niece Ellen Szetela, her husband Mike, Kim McDonough and Ralph Brogna, all held very special places in her heart, right up until God took her safely home.  Mary was an inspiration to many, and truly loved by all, who had the distinct pleasure of knowing her.

Sadly, Mary was predeceased by her beloved son Jimmy just six years ago along with her siblings Ruth, Thomas, Peggy and Claire.

Mary was the loving mother of Maureen Masterson, her husband Charles, Judy Balestrieri, her husband Louie, all of Woburn .  Cherished “Nana” of Charlie, Andy and Kevin Masterson and Danny and Tony Balestrieri and Mike Szetela and great-nana of Natalie, Bella and baby Caroline, due in December. Dear sister of Rita Potter of CA, Patricia Kelley of Lynn .  Also lovingly survived by her dear niece Ellen Szetela, her husband Mike of Woburn along with many loving nieces, nephews and close friends.
