John J. “Tanka” Tancredi Sr. – a lifelong resident of Woburn, died peacefully, May 24th after a brief illness, at 93 years of age. He was the devoted and beloved husband of the late Viola “Vi” (DeSalvo) Tancredi.

Born and raised in Woburn, John was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Verricella) Tancredi. After graduating from High School, John served his country proudly as part of the US Navy Seabees during the end of WWII and spent time on Okinawa where he unexpectedly met with fellow Woburnite and lifelong friend Fred “Obie” O’Brien.

After being honorably discharged, John fell in love with Viola DeSalvo, and in 1954 they married. For the next sixty-four years they never left each other’s side. They had two sons, John Jr. and David, and were devoted parents. Faith and family were priorities in their lives, and John was a longtime communicant of St. Charles Church.

John had many jobs throughout his long working life including Raytheon and the Beggs and Cobb tannery, but enjoyed his 25 years of employment with the Winfield Brooks Company the most.

John enjoyed spending time with his extended family, travelling to Cape Cod and playing BINGO and the harmonica in his free time. He always enjoyed driving grandchildren and nephews and nieces to St. Charles School for many years.

  1. If you look up the word “gentleman” in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of Tanka Sr. and his great smile! He was always so kind, loving, and quick with a joke. He and Vi raised two awesome children, and it’s easy to see where they got that awesome from. Heaven got a little bit better the day we lost him, and now the couple and sing and dance together once more. RIP my friend, and we will laugh together again one day soon!
