Paul M. Ahlin

Paul M. Ahlin – of Woburn, unexpectedly May 23rd at the age of fifty-eight. Devoted husband of Lisa (O’Brien) Ahlin for 30 wonderful years. Cherished father of Michael, Alyssa and Bryan Ahlin. Beloved son of Kenneth and Dorothy Ahlin of Melrose, MA. Loving brother of Kenneth Ahlin, his wife Jennifer of South Carolina and Dennis Ahlin, his wife Jennifer of Wilmington, MA. Beloved son-in-law of Paul and Judy O’Brien of Woburn, MA.  Loving brother-in-law of William O’Brien and Steven O’Brien and Donna Fernandez  all of Woburn. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Due to the current situation we are experiencing with the Corona Virus, arrangements are private at this time and under the direction of the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.

Paul M. Ahlin, 58 of Woburn, passed away suddenly Saturday, May 23rd at his family beach home surrounded by his loving family.

Paul was raised in Melrose. He was the son of Kenneth and Dorothy Ahlin still of Melrose.

Paul graduated from Melrose High School in 1979 where he established many lifelong friends.  He went on to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology earning his degree in Building Construction Technology.

Early in his career Paul worked part-time construction while holding a full-time position at Coca-Cola in Needham. In 2005, Paul achieved his lifelong dream of establishing his own construction company; PMA Builders, Inc.  He built countless houses, additions, decks, and remodels. He even built giant wooden letters to represent Alyssa’s sorority at UMASS Amherst. His work ethic was incredible. He made many friends within his industry as well as with his customers. Paul took great pride in all his projects. It wasn’t just a job to Paul. He strived to leave every customer happy, satisfied and overjoyed with the end result.

In 1987, Paul met Lisa in Killington, VT.  It was love at first sight.  They married in May of 1990 and have been inseparable for 33 years. Paul was deeply devoted to his family and was the proud father of three beautiful children; Michael, Alyssa and Bryan. His family was always first and foremost. He always had a full house at their vacation homes in Maine and Hampton beach, both of which were built by Paul. However, his best memories were spending time by his backyard pool and cooking on the grill with family and friends.

Paul and Lisa loved to travel. They were fortunate to visit many amazing places. Aruba, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bermuda and so many more. Catalina Island was one of Paul’s favorite vacations because he was able to drive a golf cart around all day.

Paul loved to golf, especially when he was able to play with his son Michael. He also loved to play hockey and softball. During the winters, he loved getting together with the guys to go snowmobiling in Canada, Maine and New Hampshire. In the summer, he enjoyed riding his jet-skis on the lake.

Paul loved to help his community. He coached Woburn Little League for many years as well as Woburn Recreational Basketball.  You could always count on Paul to volunteer to operate the clock at the Woburn Travel Basketball games. He never missed one of Bryan’s high school basketball games. Most recently, he built the snack shack at Gonsalves Park.  His dedication to Woburn was endless.

Paul really cared for people and was always willing to help. He truly cherished his friendships and continued to make new friendships wherever he would go. Paul is remembered for his love of his family, his friends, his work, his fun-loving personality and his amazing blue eyes and smile.

Along with his wife Lisa, Paul is survived by his 3 beautiful children, Michael, Alyssa and Bryan Ahlin.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date and at that time a party will be thrown in typical Paul fashion with cold beers, chicken wings and family and friends sharing wonderful memories of Paul. As a remembrance, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Paul to Woburn Recreational Basketball, 10 Common St. City Hall, Woburn, Ma 01801 c/o Rory Lindstrom or Woburn Little League, PO Box 140, Woburn, Ma 01801 c/o Mark Cavicchi

To Lisa, Alyssa, Michael & Bryan: I’ve been trying to come up with the perfect words to express how sorry I am, but those words simply don’t exist. The loss that your family experienced is unfair in so many ways. I think I speak for everyone when I say that the Ahlin family has a bond like no other. While these days may feel dark and the light at the end of the tunnel may seem so far away, I hope you continue to keep Paul alive in the stories you tell and the memories you share. I believe, from the bottom of my heart, that he is with you everyday whether you feel him or not. I did not have the luxury of getting to know Paul personally, but the time I’ve spent with the rest of your family has been overpowered with love. I hope as you read these notes from all of your loved ones, that his memory shines through each one. The Ahlin bond is unbreakable, even from something as catastrophic as this. I love you all so much, and my heart is broken for you. Keep looking for signs, he’s sending them to you all in one way or another. Love always, Grace Chisholm

  7. Paul, it was an honor to be in you presence, laugh with you, and to be your friend. Today, I had the ultimate honor of escorting you home. We will meet again someday. In Nordic lore, all warriors go to a large hall called Valhalla. Save me a seat next to you so we can laugh again together.

Lisa, Michael, Alyssa, and Bryan, thank you for trusting me with Big A. Words can’t describe what Paul meant to all of us who knew him. All I can say is that I’m sorry and will always be here for all of you because that’s what Paul would say and do. He truly was larger than life.

    Vaya con Dios, my friend,

    Tim Donovan

  16. Paul took me under his wing after I graduated high school and I worked summers with him. He taught me so much about the trades and how important it was to treat customers with respect and to take great care on their projects. He also taught me how to treat follow contractors and how important it was to lean on each other. I am so fortunate to have had the privilege to have that time with Paul. He was good friends with my father Bob and they had some great years together building. They were very close and Paul was so kind to reach out when my father passed a few years back. I hope him and my father are together and busting on each other like they use to.

To Lisa and family. Paul gave so much and took so little and his impact on my life and others ripples across so many. My career today is testament to his teachings. Our thoughts are with you all at this difficult time. Thank you for sharing him with the world.

  29. Lisa, Michael, Alyssa, Bryan and the extended O’Brien and Ahlin family, I am so sorry for your loss. It was way too soon.
From when I first met Paul I could tell he was great guy and a mature responsible adult with goals and ambitions in life . He was a hard worker who earned everything he got in life. But not only was he a hard worker but had a perfect work-life balance. Always finding quality time to spend with his family and be there for them. It was like he was from a different era with his strive to love, respect and provide for his family.

My daughter is fourteen and just starting the dating scene. My hope is when she eventually finds a man to marry that he will share the same values and ethics as Paul. Then I can be at ease as a father knowing my daughter will truly be cared for.

  44. Jackie Albertian

My heart is heavy. I am at a loss for words, so I find myself listening to music and playing one song over again… Smile by Pearl Jam. It reminds me to do just that … smile and to try and find peace with it and to think of the good memories we had doing this project. It’s hard because I walk the inside or outside of my house and all I see is you. I see your truck out front, I see you sitting in there having your coffee and cigar and making calls. I hear your voice in my head guiding me to the next right decision and all I want to do is give you a hug and say thanks for everything. I know you know how much it meant to me but at the same token I selfishly feel like a part of me is missing now because we can’t sit back and reflect on all we did over the past 8 months. I got the last laugh with the building inspector like we talked about on Thursday afternoon – passed the inspection!! At almost 38 years old, I guess by now I should know enough about loss to realize that you never really stop missing someone, you just learn to live around the huge gaping hole of their absence. You had a larger than life presence and you took each role seriously and gave it all you had with your huge heart, love, smile and bright blue eyes! I’ll do my best to try and find some peace with everything and to Lisa, Michael, Alyssa, Brian – you guys are the first and last thing I think of these days. You will be in my family’s prayers. RIP Paul – The Albertian Family of Dracut MA Shannon, Jackie, Arya and Kaden (A.K.A. “T”)
