Margaret “Peggy” (McGondel) Flannigan

Margaret “Peggy” (McGondel) Flannigan – of Woburn, Sunday, April 5th, at the age of eighty-six. Beloved wife of the late Francis Flannigan. Cherished mother of Sean Flannigan, his wife Carolyn of Peabody. Loving grandmother of Nichole and Kaitlin. Dear sister of the late Buddy, Billy, Jack, Charlie, George and Larry McGondel. Due to the current situation we are experiencing with the Corona Virus, arrangements are private and under the direction of the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.

Margaret “Peggy” J. (McGondel) Flannigan, age 86, of Wilmington, MA formally of Woburn, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday April 5, 2020 at Adviniacare of Wilmington, formally known as Woodbriar. Where she had been living as resident for the last eight years.

Peggy was born on December 31, 1933 in Woburn, MA. She was the only daughter of Charles Edward and Sarah Janette (Connolly) McGondel. As a child, she attended Saint Charles Catholic School in Woburn, MA. Eventually, the McGondel family moved to Wilmington, MA, where Peggy graduated from Wilmington High School in 1952. After studying business throughout high school, she started working at John Hancock Insurance in Boston, MA. In addition, Peggy worked a part-time job at a coffee shop in Winchester, MA.

While Peggy was working her part-time job at the coffee shop, she met her late husband Francis X. Flannigan, of Woburn, MA. They married in 1962 and remained so for almost 40 years. They had one son, Sean F. Flannigan formally of Woburn, MA, currently residing in Peabody, MA with his loving wife Carolyn A. (Kernweis) Flannigan. While raising her son, Peggy worked as a lunch lady for the Woburn Public School System for ten years where she retired.

Peggy is also survived by her pride and joy, her two grandchildren, Nichole A. Kernweis and Kaitlin R. Flannigan of Peabody, MA. Along with her grand-pup, Molly Girl, who she loved dearly and always made sure she was the best fed in the house. Her family was her life and spending time with her grandchildren gave her the greatest joy. Peggy loved taking her grandchildren on walks through Winchester Center and playing make believe. Her grandchildren loved her grilled cheese sandwiches, her hot dogs, and her famous baked potatoes. Visiting Grammie’s was the best because there were always candy and cookies and you never heard the word “no.” It did not matter who you were, when you went to Peggy’s house you always felt welcomed and loved; you would not be able to leave without a cup of tea and cookie. She was a dedicated grandmother, she never missed a cheerleading or dance competition, school plays, or graduations.

Some of Peggy’s other interests were watching the Red Sox, shopping at Kohl’s and taking care of her Parakeet, Tweety.

Family was everything to Peggy. Peggy was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, godmother, and sister. She is the dear sister of the late, Charles (Charlie), Bartholomew (Buddy), John (Jack), William (Billy), George and Lawrence (Larry) McGondel, and survived by countless nieces and nephews.

Due to the current situation we are experiencing with the Corona Virus, arrangements are private and under the direction of the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, MA. The family will hold a celebration of life when the current restrictions are lifted, and everything is safe.

Peg was a wonderful neighbor and friend when we lived above her on White Street in Winchester. She always referred to our son, Kyle, as Thumper because he was always bouncing around above them. She never complained about it. We had many a long conversation while we raked leaves or later when we saw each other in passing at stop and shop or Walgreens.
Our thought and prayers are with you Sean, and your family. We know it’s a huge loss!
