Charles Gerald “Gerry” Lohnes, 90, of Woburn, MA, died Sunday, January 6th, at the Winchester Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Ann (Kenney) Lohnes.
Born in Woburn, Gerry was the only child of the late Francis (Patriquin) and Roger Lohnes. He was educated in Woburn and graduated from Woburn High School. In 1946, at the age of 18, Gerry enlisted in the US Navy where he served his country proudly at the close of WWII.
When he returned from the service, Gerry worked for a local sand and gravel company and held a retail position at the former Sears and Roebuck in Burlington Mass. It was during this time that he met his wife Ann and after a short courtship they married and raised five children in East Woburn. He also began his long career as a Lineman at the Boston Edison where he was a tireless worker and cherished long overtime shifts restoring power outages after large storm events. He also enjoyed plowing snow as a private contractor for the City of Woburn.
Ann and Gerry enjoyed many wonderful trips during their marriage and were blessed to travel to Bermuda, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, Las Vegas and throughout New England. They also enjoyed casual evenings together at the Lobster Claw in North Reading and watching the sunset at the summer concert series at Horn Pond. During his retirement, Gerry also enjoyed walking the trails at Horn Pond, participated in Woburn’s Conservation Day events and greatly appreciated the serenity and peacefulness of the pond’s natural environment.
Gerry was extremely active in his children and grandchildren’s lives and enjoyed teaching, coaching and watching them compete in many sports including hockey, baseball, basketball and football. In 1973, Gerry was the General Manager of the Boston Junior Braves and was particularly proud of his son Paul’s team winning America’s first International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament of Quebec. He also introduced his beloved daughter Krissy to horses and horse showing and they were often seen at the former Winning Farm together.
Gerry is survived and will be deeply missed by his children, Gerald T. Lohnes and wife Lisa of Woburn, Paul J. Lohnes and wife Katie of Chelmsford, Brian J. Lohnes and wife Jennifer of NH, John M. Lohnes and his partner Paula Miele of Woburn and Kristine M. Lohnes-Smillie and her partner Chuck McCormick of Woburn. Cherished grandfather of David, Patrick, Ellie and John Lohnes, Sean and Kellie Smillie and Michael Calicchio.

My dad and I are so sorry to hear about your Dad’s passing. My dad goes way back with your father and always spoke about playing on the Ryan Company with him and graduating with him. Nothing but great memories of your family, hockey family are the best, and you are a tremendous family because of your Dad and Mom.
