OBITUARY:

Douglas R. “Doug” Murphy passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, January 7th, at fifty-seven years of age. He was the loving husband of Tracey (Franson) Murphy.

Born in Cambridge, Doug was one of three sons born to the late Michael and Julie (Johnson) Murphy. Doug attended Woburn Schools, and excelled in swimming where he would become the Captain of swim team and went on to an undefeated season his senior year.

Summers growing up were always spent at Long Beach in Gloucester, where the Johnson and Murphy families would gather. While in High School, Doug met the true love of his life, Tracey Franson. For over the last thirty two years they have journeyed together as husband and wife, bringing their two daughters into the world, whom he cherished.

Doug and his family truly enjoyed spending summers at his family’s home on Long Beach, as well as Freedom, NH, with his family and friends at Wabaniki Campground on Lake Ossipee, their family owned campground. Doug enjoyed cruising the lake in his boat and participating in all the activities that took place there, amongst all their family and friends in and on the water!

Throughout his life Doug could often be found at the stock car races, helping his father and brothers, Steve and Mike, in the pits with M3 and M32 racing. When not on the race track he could be found working along side his dad in their garage, getting ready for the next race!

Doug was truly a dedicated member of society. Often he would be found helping with High School sporting events, football and basketball, as well as as all the Youth sports taking place in the City. To say, Doug truly loved the city of Woburn, and everyone in it, is an understatement. Doug was a proud 13th generation Woburnite. The foundation established all those generations ago has continued on, and Doug was a wonderful contributor to that legacy. If there was a charitable event in town, you could rest assure Doug was going to be there, wether he was behind the scenes or there with Tracey and his “girls.” In fact Doug could be found helping anyone that needed a hand with something/ anything, without hesitation, looking for nothing in return. Any time or anywhere, Doug was there.

Doug held many jobs around town. At a young age, he worked at the Daily Times, from there worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service and for close to the last decade, Doug proudly worked for the City of Woburn in the Department of Public Works and was stationedat the the Veteran’s School Senior Center, tending to the needs of not just the building, but each and every individual in the building!

Above all else in Doug’s world, his greatest joy in life was his family, Tracey, Erin and Emily. There was not anything humanly possible that he would not do for them.

Doug will be remembered as dynamic, fun loving, kind, charismatic guy, with a beautifully contagious smile, that absolutely brought great joy to all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Sadly Doug was pre deceased by his his parents Mike and Julie Murphy.

He is lovingly survived by his wife Tracey (Franson) Murphy, daughters, Erin Dean, her husband Craig and Emily Murphy of Woburn, brothers of Michael P. Murphy, his wife Marianne of Duxbury and Steven Murphy, his wife Erica of Tewksbury. Doug is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, Saturday, January 13th at 10 a.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, Friday, January 12th, 2 – 7 p.m. At the family’s request PLEASE OMIT FLOWERS.
