OBITUARY:

Gerald “Jerry” Canada, a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Friday, April 28th. The beloved husband of the late Karen (Dwyer) Canada, he was seventy seven years of age.

Born and raised in Woburn, Jerry was one of twelve children of the late Reginald and Mary Alice (Finley) Canada. Raised in the Hammond Square section of the city, Jerry graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1957.

Following high school, Jerry began his career with the United States Postal Service. Jerry worked for the US Postal Service as a carrier for many years and retired as a Supervisor eleven years ago.

All throughout his life Jerry was very, very, active in sports throughout the city. While he was growing up he played them all, basketball, baseball and football. If he didn’t play it in High School he played in “pick up” in the neighborhood and at Library Field; even before he had his own children, he was a part of all the sports in the city for the kids.

Jerry could be found on any field at any given time. He had a true knack for all Woburn sports. Wether it be football, basketball, baseball, or softball, Jerry was involved! Either coaching, umpiring, refereeing, or giving his support from the sidelines he was a part of it all throughout the years. In 1979, Jerry was the President of Woburn Pop Warner. When Jerry was coaching a team, it was almost guaranteed that his team was on its way to a championship. Jerry had what it took to be a successful coach, a good listener, watched intently, and was always gentle, yet stern with his coaching techniques.

Jerry was the ultimate Dad! He so enjoyed spending time with family at home, on the fields and doing whatever they enjoyed doing. Then the grandchildren came along “Papa” took great interest in all that they did. They were all quite a team throughout the years!

Jerry will fondly be remembered as a charismatic, loving, and sometimes stern, husband, father, Papa, and friend.

Sadly he was predeceased by his parents, wife Karen, son Shawn, and siblings, Wendell, Daniel, Richard, William, and Cynthia.

Jerry is lovingly survived by his children Erik, Kristy Russell, her husband Jeremy, Kevin, “Papa” of Eyan, Jaden, Kaleb, and Addison Russell, Gianna Attanasio and Noah Canada. Dear brother of Kenneth of CA, Thomas of GA, James of Woburn, Janet of Reading, Nancy, and Shirley, both of Woburn.. A Funeral Service will be held in the Woburn United Methodist Church, 523 Main St. Woburn, Thursday, May 4th, at 10 a.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to calling hours at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, Wednesday, May 3rd from 2 – 4 and 6 to 8 pm. 3. Erik, Kristy and Kevin, so sorry to hear of Dad’s passing. He was one of our oldest friends for years. He and Uncle Danny early on we’re dedicated to the Babe Ruth League with me. He was a great friend, coach in both football and baseball as well as a referee. He was a special man and those who’s lives were touched by him
were blessed. We have many great memories from through the years. Out prayers are with you all during this difficult time. He is at peace, free from pain and happy to be with mom again.

  4. Kristy and family,

So sorry to hear the news of your dad’s passing. I will always think fondly of him as “our most vocal and kind lunch monitor” at the Altavesta not that long ago.

May he rest in peace with the assurance that he is with Jesus now.

Our love, Lois and Jerry Surette
