Irene (Hawley) Marcus Santamaria passed away peacefully at Sanctuary Care of Rye NH on Wednesday, November 23rd after a long illness. The beloved wife of the late William “Willy” F. Marcus and in later years the late Peter R. Santamaria. Irene was 86 years of age.
Born in Pepperell, Irene was the daughter of the late Alfred Joseph and Agnes Mary (Rodier) Hawley.
The Hawley family moved to Winchester in the early 30’s for a several years before moving to Woburn. In June of 1947, Irene married the love of her life, “Willie” Marcus. Irene worked for many years at the Sylvania
Electric Plant in North Woburn until the late 60s. Irene was always interested in learning and in 1973 she completed her high school education receiving her well-earned high school diploma. She then continued her education at the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School, becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, in June of 1976.
Irene and Willie often enjoyed vacation time though out New England during the summer months. Camping, fishing and scouting out yard sales, looking for that next find, that would be turned into a beautiful treasure.
Together they built a summer home in Gloucester. Irene loved the beach! Irene could always be found soaking up the rays, taking long walks, or soaking her feet at the shoreline at Wingaersheek Beach, on any given sunny day.
Irene was an avid quilter for many years and enjoyed the company of fellow quilters, sometimes traveling many hours and miles to find just the right material for her current quilting project.
There really wasn’t too much Irene couldn’t do! Painting, sewing, or woodworking, if she saw something she really liked, it was just a matter of time before Irene, with the help of Willy if needed, brought it to fruition. Irene’s sense of accomplishment in her ability to create was apparent throughout her family home.
For many years she volunteered her time and helped to organize and run the Thrift Shop at St. Charles Church. Irene always had a tremendous sense of style and could turn a “thrift store” coat into a designer-like garment with ease! Helping those in need gave Irene a wonderfully good feeling and those who frequented the shop to find particular items, always left feeling pretty good about their new find!
Sadly, her beloved “Willie” passed away in 1991. In October of 2000, Irene married Peter R. Santamaria. They were married eight years and had enjoyed dining out, traveling with friends and were active in St. Charles Church until she was widowed again in 2008.
Irene shared many joys in her lifetime throughout the years with her children,Kimberly (Kim) and Stephen as well as her grandchildren, Hunter and Isabella Marcus and Alexandra, April, Billy and Jennifer Roschewski.
As Irene’s health started to decline she moved to Sanctuary Care of Rye, NH in May, 2015 where she continued to be a beacon of love and light to all she met, despite her failing health.
Irene sadly was predeceased by her son William “Buzzy” Marcus and daughter Cynthia Marcus, her brother Robert J. Hawley and sister in law Ruth Hawley and niece Ruth Ann Hawley.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter Kimberly Marcus Roschewski, her husband Bill of York, ME and Stephen Marcus of Peabody, her dear brother, Philip A.
