OBITUARY:

Mary E. (Callahan) Byrne passed away Tuesday, October 24th at the Lahey Clinic after being stricken at her home. The beloved wife of the late James D. Byrne Sr., she was ninety one years of age.

Born in Boston, Mary was the daughter of the late Rose Mary (Calley) Callahan. Sadly, Rose passed away just two years after Mary was born, she was then adopted into the William and Katherine (Flaherty) Courtney family and was a loving child of the Courtney’s for eighty nine years.

Raised and educated in Woburn, Mary had attended Woburn Elementary and High School. Following high school she went on to work at the shoe factory in Stoneham. One evening when she and some friends ventured out to Boston to go dancing . She was introduced to one of her friends, brothers, Jim Byrne. Well that was the beginning of a relationship that spanned over sixty years.

They made their home in the “Rag Rock” section of the city where they raised their six children. All throughout the years Hampton Beach was the place for the summer vacations where they would be joined by family and friends throughout the years. Bringing the family to the Wal-lex in Waltham on Sunday’s was always a great time for all. Mary, being a fabulous dancer throughout the years, so enjoyed the roller skating and along with Jim would often frequent the dance floor at parties, weddings or any opportunity that would present itself.

For over twenty years Mary worked as a Lunch Monitor for the Woburn Public Schools and enjoyed every day. For a good number of years Mary often frequented Bingo at St. Charles and the South End Italian Club. Mary also was an avid sports fan, thoroughly enjoying the Patriots and never missing a game. Mary had actually cheered the Patriots on to victory Sunday, just before she was stricken at her home.

As the years went by and her children began to marry and brought children into the world, Mary was thrilled. She had a very special place in heart for her grandchildren, enjoying all the time she was able to spend with them. A very faith filled woman, Mary was very active in St. Charles Parish throughout the years. Mary’s faith and family was who and what Mary cherished throughout her life.

Mary was sadly predeceased by her parents, her husband Jim and siblings, Bill Courtney, Lorraine Langill and sister in law Loretta Courtney.

Mary is lovingly survived by her children of Donna Lisbon of Rochester,NH, Sheila Cerroni, her husband Louie of Wells, ME, Joanne Conboy of Melrose, James Byrne Jr., his wife Joanne , Linda Lagomarsino , Maryellen Byrne all of Woburn.
