OBITUARY:

Rita C. (Donovan) Matthews passed away 0n Tuesday March 15th after a brief illness. The beloved wife of the late John J. Matthews, she was ninety two and one half.

Born in Somerville she was one of two children born to the late Jerimiah and Nora Sweeney Donovan. Raised and educated in Woburn Rita was a graduate of Woburn High School with the Class of 1941. After high school she continued her education at the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School for Women.

Rita had secured an executive secretary position at a shipping mogul, where she worked until 1963, during which time she also did an awful lot of travelling in that position.

In 1943 Rita’s family and several other families met at Lynn Beach for an outing. It was there that she was introduced to John Matthews. Nine years later he had returned from the service, finished college and then reconnected with Rita and married in 1962! They shared a wonderful relationship for over the next fifty years.

Going to the beach in the winter was not unusual as they always had shared a fondness for the ocean. Hiking, walking, and listening to the Red Sox and Bruins was a lot of their shared fun time, actually she only liked hockey because he did. They had travelled to Canada, Cape Bretton and when grand children arrived visiting them whether it be the state of Washington or New Hampshire, they always took the time to visit.

Rita loved the outdoors and everything it had to offer. When they spent time at their place at Lake Ossipee over the years there was nothing nicer than sitting on the porch in her rocking chair, cup of tea in hand and the newspaper or crossword books at her side, that was the best! When she was surrounded by family was the ultimate.

Sadly, Rita was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband John J. Matthews and her dear sister Terry Donovan.

She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Catherine M. “Cathy” Dudak of NH, her grandchildren, Stephanie Dudak of NH, Adam Dudak of WA and Chris Dudak of Wayland and her great grandchildren.

A Funeral will be held from the Lynch –Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main St. Woburn, on Friday March 18 at 11:15 am followed by a Funeral Mass in St.Charles Church 280 Main St. Woburn at 11:30 am. Interment in St Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Friday morning from 10:15-11:15 a.m. prior to the Funeral.
