OBITUARY:

Marie (Sirwatka) McCall passed away at the Hearthstone at Choate, after a lengthy illness. The beloved wife of the late Edward H. McCall DDS, she was 94 years of age.

Born in Scranton, PA., she was the daughter of the late John J. and Josephine (Mayer) Sirwatka. Marie’s Dad was born and raised in Hungary and were a very culturally proud family.

Marie was raised and educated in Scranton having graduated from St. Mary’s High School, with the Class of 1938.

During the 1940’s, Marie took a Civil Service Exam and as a result was selected to work for the United States Naval Department during WWII.

One night while working in Washington D.C., Marie and friends went out to dinner to Tehan’s (which later became the popular 1789 Club). It was there that she met a very fine waiter named Ed, who was working his way through Georgetown University Dental School! In 1946 they were married at the Holy Trinity Church on the campus of Georgetown University.

Upon graduation from Dental School in 1947, Marie and Ed returned to Ed’s hometown of Woburn. That same year they opened his dental practice where Marie assisted in all the daily office duties, also serving as the receptionist.

When the Korean War broke out, Dr. McCall was called to duty as a Naval Dentist both moving to Newport, Rhode Island to serve.

Having returned to Woburn a couple of years later and having children in toe, they resumed their office operation Six children total filled the McCall household. A very spirited homemaker and always a woman of the times, she totally immersed herself in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Whatever was going on, she was always present and partaking in any and all activities. From school, sporting events, hobbies, colleges, graduations and weddings, Marie loved being a part of it all!

Having been a very active member of St. Charles Parish, Marie was also a long time member of the St. Charles Woman’s Club. An avid bowler for a very good number of years, she always enjoyed the Woburn Bowladrome, where she could be found with her children or friends totaling up the strings! Reading all genres, doing puzzles, playing cards or knitting with her “Club” always keeping busy!

Sadly, in addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by her husband Edward, brother Paul Sirwatka and his wife Charlotte and inlaws Anne Coyle and her husband Howard, Phyllis Brady and her husband Roger and Gloria Noll and her husband Edward.

Marie is lovingly survived by her children Cathe Hockenberry and her husband Bill of VA, Judith Cutts and her husband Richard of Woburn, Edward H. McCall, Jr., DDS of Carlisle, Patricia McCall Campbell, DDS and her husband Paul of NH, Maureen Austin ESQ. and her husband Albert of CA, and Daniel McCall, DMD and his wife Tracy of Woburn, sister in-law of Frank and Claire McCall and Eleanor McCall Zachary all of Woburn, Loving grandmother of eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Marie is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. 1. I am deeply sorry for your loss. Marie was a special lady/mom. Back in the sixties when I worked for Dad. She would bring you into the office on Winn Street, and such a lovely and beautiful person, always with a big smile and a quiet way about her. I worked with ,(Dad) and with my sister Cathy, and what a wonderful family I came to meet and love. May you always remember the love that you shared as a family, and those memories will keep you close forever. love to you all..Nancy O’Connor Randall Mondello.

  2. I met Marie at Hearthstone while visiting my Mother in Law, Tillie. Marie always had on a big smile and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her eyes would sparkle when she was getting ready to deliver a funny comeback. My 13 year old son and I visited Hearthstone at dinnertime on Christmas Eve and as always Marie gave us one of her little waves. She commented on my son’s Mohawk, red streaked hair style, asking how we got it that way. With a grin and a twinkle she wondered if it was on purpose! I am so sorry for your loss. She will be missed by so many.
