OBITUARY:

Mary Byron Burke passed away at the Kaplan House in Danvers, lovingly surrounded by her dear family, Thursday September third. The beloved wife of the late Dr. Edward Newell Burke, M.D., she was ninety six years of age.

Born in East Woburn, she was one of four children of the late Lawrence R. and Bertha (McCall) Byron.

Raised and educated in Woburn, she was a graduate of Woburn High School with the Class of 1936. Mary continued on with her education at Emmanuel College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, Class of 1940. St. Mary School in Winchester is where Mary began her teaching career remaining for two years and then accepted a position in her hometown, teaching English at Woburn Junior High School.

In 1949 she married her best friend and the truest love of her life, Newell Burke. They moved to West Medford where they made their home , and brought four wonderful children into the world, to whom they were devoted.

Mary was exceptionally devoted to her family. She took great pride in all of their achievements and accomplishments and always was their strongest supporter in any and all of their individual and group ventures.

Mary’s roots were firmly planted in East Woburn, where she and Newell kept friendships with those friends and family from the past. Her Irish heritage was also very meaningful, sharing that with her children throughout the years.

Extensive travelling in and about Europe was always something she and Newell loved to do. Particularly taking time in London, was always a favorite of Mary’s. When summer months arrived and the children were small to present day, precious time was spent at their home in York Cliffs, Maine. There over the years it was a wonderful place for children, grandchildren and extended family to come and share in all the “specialties” of summer and making some truly cherished memories.

A woman of strong faith and devotion, she celebrated each and everyday with a prayer. A very elegant and dignified woman, Mary shared a great sense of humor, strong beliefs and a fierce loyalty to her family and those with whom she shared her life.

In addition to her parents, her beloved husband of fifty years Newell, Mary was also predeceased by her siblings Doris Lander and Dr. Lawrence Byron, her sister in laws, Sister Fanchon Burke,CSJ, Gertrude Rose Brown, Harvey Merrow,Chester Lander and grandson Christoper Burke.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your Mother. Even though years have passed when we lived next door at 30 Pine Ridge Road, our families grew up together with fond memories of the time. 3. Dear Laureen, Martha, Edward and Laurence

My sincere sympathy is extended to all of you on the loss of your mother. She was a kind, thoughtful and sweet woman but first and foremost she was always, always a lady! I had the privilege of meeting her many years ago. Your father had given me a gift for helping a particular patient but It had your mother’s stamp all over it! After all these years whenever I use the beautiful flowered salt & pepper shakers I think fondly of Dr. and Mary Burke and smile ……
    Sincerely, Maureen Connolly O’Donnell
