MARY V. (VIVA) McCAFFREY – of Woburn, Saturday, August 29th. Beloved wife of the late Owen J. McCaffrey. Devoted mother of Michael A. McCaffrey and his wife Lisa Valence of NH and Stephen O. McCaffrey and his wife Stacey of Charlestown. Dear sister of Mafalda “Tilly” Thebault of Nova Scotia and the late Frank, Umberto, Nicolas, Louie, Tony, Joseph, Concetta, Annie, Yolanda, Gina, Theresa, Rose, and Dominica. Cherished grandmother of Elisha, Michael, Shannon, Owen, Matthew, and Julia Mae. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Thursday, September 3rd at 7 p.m. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. prior to the Service. Interment is private. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Mary’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.

OBITUARY:

Mary V. (Viva) McCaffrey passed away Saturday, August 29th at the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington. The beloved wife of the late Owen J. McCaffrey, she was ninety-six years of age.

Born and raised in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Mary was one of fourteen children of the late Agostino and Studia (Panzino) Viva. She attended school in Sydney Mines, graduating from Sydney Mines High School with the Class of 1937. After graduation, Mary attended Notre Dame University and received a degree in Nursing.

Mary married the love of her life, Owen, and they brought two wonderful sons into the world. They made their home on the West Side of Woburn where they raised their family. As a family, they enjoyed many trips to Prince Edward Island and Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia so they could visit their family’s roots and heritage. They also spent many happy summers at Pillsbury Lake in New Hampshire where they loved to camp, fish, and boat. As the family grew, Mary was delighted to become “Gram” and “Nana” to her six beloved grandchildren. She loved entertaining and hosting her family. A wonderful cook, Mary was best known for her delicious lasagna, meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, and chocolate roll to name a few!

Mary was a longtime parishioner of St. Barbara’s Church and a member of her bridge club for the past thirty years. She made many great friends and happy memories with the club and they often travelled together to Aruba and Florida.

Mary was a woman with a great sense of humor who always greeted everyone with a smile or laugh. She will be missed by her friends and family.

In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Owen J. McCaffrey; and her siblings, Frank, Umberto, Nicolas, Louie, Tony, Joseph, Concetta, Annie, Yolanda, Gina, Theresa, Rose, and Dominica.

She is lovingly survived by her sons, Michael A. McCaffrey and his wife Lisa Valence of NH and Stephen O. McCaffrey and his wife Stacey of Charlestown; her sister, Mafalda “Tilly” Thebault of Nova Scotia; and her grandchildren, Elisha, Michael, Shannon, Owen, Matthew, and Julia Mae.

    Very sorry for your loss. I remember well our visits to Massachusetts and the warmth and generosity of your family.

    As you know, my father, Frank died last year:

    Still, my mother Barbara is still alive. She can’t walk after three hip operations but remembers everything.

    I hope you will consider a visit to Toronto sometime soon.
