OBITUARY:

Catherine “Felicity” Fowkes, 84, died Friday, April 24th following a lengthy period of declining health.

Born in Prickwillow, England, she was the cherished daughter of the Rev. J. K. Cecil and Vera Laura (Latham) Payne. She attended St. Brandons, a British boarding school, where she received an excellent education. She went on to become a registered nurse. Felicity worked as a nurse in hospitals, as a private duty nurse, and twice cared for lepers at a Tropical Disease Hospital. She also went to work in Denmark for some time. Felicity later boarded the ocean liner, the Queen Elizabeth, bound for America to work as a travel nurse at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Her intent was to work in America for a period of time and return home to England, but ended up meeting her future, beloved husband, William Fowkes of Youghal, Ireland, onboard ship.

Felicity and William married in Boston in 1959 and remained in America for the duration of their lives, bringing three children, Vera, John and Victoria into the world. Felicity and family moved from Somerville to Woburn in 1968.

Felicity loved her family, all animals, her friends, especially her neighbors Margaret Simpson and Anne O’Brien, her garden, flowers, traveling, watercolor painting, fine literature, opera, and a great game of Scrabble.

Her true passion in life was animals. Felicity had numerous pets (mostly rescues) throughout her life. She was also a member of various animal rights organizations, participating in demonstrations, letter-writing, and donation generously to the cause. In addition, she was a vegetarian for close to four decades.

Felicity is now at rest from her long battle with rheumatoid arthritis and its secondary complications. She was grateful for all the medical care provided to her over the years from Lahey Clinic, Burlington.

Felicity was sadly predeceased by her husband, William, her son-in-law, Ray Colbert, her siblings, John Payne and Venetia Roland, and her brother-in-law, Dudley Darrell.

She is lovingly survived by her children, C. Vera Bebezas and her husband Dimitrios, John P. Fowkes and his wife Elaine, and Victoria S.M. Colbert, all of Woburn; her sister, Ursula Darrell of England; and her grandchildren, Magnolia Mae, Sophia, William, Shayne, and Aaron.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to call at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Tuesday, April 28th from 6 to 8 p.m. Services and interment are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal organization of your choice, in Felicity’s memory.
