OBITUARY:

Benita Sanchez passed away Wednesday, April 22nd at the Pine Knoll Nursing Center in Lexington. The beloved wife of the late Eladio Martinez, she was eighty-eight years of age.

Born and raised in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, Benita was one of several children of the late Gumesindo and Pascasia (Colon) Sanchez. She remained in Puerto Rico until 1959 when she, her husband, and eldest son moved to Woburn to make their home. She brought six more children into the world and was completely devoted to them. As the family grew, Benita was delighted at becoming “Nani,” “Abuela,” and “Grandma” to her twenty-five grandchildren, and later, thirteen great-grandchildren.

Benita worked for many years at the Stoneham Laundromat where she did the cleaning for local hospitals and nursing homes. She also worked here in Woburn at the National Guard Building on Main Street for many years as a cleaner. A hard worker and good friend, Benita was always willing to lend a helping hand to her sick neighbors or people coming from Puerto Rico who needed help. She opened her home to anyone that needed a warm meal, including those less fortunate. Benita could always be found in the kitchen, readying home cooked Puerto Rican delicacies for friends, family, and anyone who missed Island cooking.

A devout Catholic, Benita took her religion very seriously. She said the Rosary daily and had many religious icons of Jesus and the Virgin Mary throughout her home. A woman of high morals and exceptional character, Benita was a true giver and helper.

In addition to her parents, Benita was predeceased by her husband, Eladio Martinez, her son, Samuel Calixto, and several brothers and sisters.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Andre “Andy” Martinez, Sandra Montanez, Albert Calixto, all of Woburn, Miriam Calixto of Saugus, Espel Calixto, Nancy Ramos, both of Woburn, twenty-five grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Monday, April 27th at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn at 10. Relatives and friends may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery.
