OBITUARY:

Barbara J. (Desmond) Harkins passed away on Friday, April 10th at the Woburn Nursing Center with her loving family by her side. The beloved wife of Charles J. Harkins, she was seventy-four years of age.

Born and raised in Woburn, Barbara was one of seven children of the late Timothy and Catherine (Driscoll) Desmond. She grew up in the Central Square section of the city and attended Woburn Schools, graduating from Woburn High School with the Class of 1958.

One day, while at a wedding, Barbara had the good fortune of meeting the groom’s brother, Charles. The two began dating in 1963 and married in May of 1965. They decided to make their home in the same neighborhood that she grew up. They had three wonderful children who became their world. Barbara was a very loving and caring mom and her children’s biggest supporter. Always involved in PTA, Girl Scouts, and volunteering at the schools or Library, she was ever present and active in whatever her children were involved in. As a family they enjoyed many happy summers camping in NH and Maine. As her family grew, and grandchildren arrived, Barbara was delighted to become “Nanny” to her eight grandchildren, and later, great-grandson. She was a proud grandmother and very protective and loyal to her family. Never one to miss out on the fun, Barbara built hundreds of snowmen throughout the years.

You would often find Barbara outdoors at home, tending to her garden or mowing the lawn. She enjoyed making crafts and going out with her friends and also having dinner parties. When her children were older, Barbara opened a daycare in her own home and did this for the next fifteen years. Later in life, she and her husband loved getting in the car and driving up to Vermont for the fresh mountain air. Her love of the outdoors and camping stayed strong throughout her lifetime.

A woman of strength, love, and devotion to her family and friends Barbara took great pride in being a homemaker, Mom, and “Nanny.” She will be dearly missed by everyone who had the distinct pleasure of knowing her.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her siblings, Anne and John Desmond, her sister-in-law, Arlene Desmond, and her brothers-in-law, Gerard Sweeney and Joe Aucoin.

She is lovingly survived by her husband of fifty-years, Charles J. Harkins; her children, Kathleen Mooney and her husband James of Tewskbury, Barry Harkins and his wife Susan of Woburn, and Julie DeLuca and her husband Scott of Reading; her siblings, Ruth Sweeney of Woburn, Frank Desmond of NH, Elaine Aucoin of Woburn, and Jean Donovan of Billerica; her grandchildren, Ryan, Alyssa, Stephanie, Jack, Colin, Chloe, Sydney, and Cole; and her great-grandson, Michael.

Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Friday, April 17th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn at 10. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Funeral Home from 8:30 to 9:30 prior to the Mass. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
