OBITUARY:

Frederick L. Casey, Sr., a resident of Woburn for over fifty years, passed away on Friday, November 11th, at the age of ninety-six. He was the beloved husband of the late Lillian T. (Lentz) Casey, who died in 1995, and he died on the sixty-seventh anniversary of their marriage.

Born and raised in Somerville, Fred was one of eight children of the late Thomas and Catherine (Reynolds) He and his wife Lillian were married in 1944 and lived in Somerville until taking up residence on Woburn’s West Side in 1961, where they remained. In early years, he owned and operated the Union Square Cash Market in Somerville. He later went to work as a meat caseman for Star Market, where he was a familiar figure at the Woburn store for many years. After retiring in 1980, he continued to work part time for another eleven years.

Fred’s passion in life was baseball. He played in high school and afterward for a semi-pro league. An avid Red Sox fan throughout his life, he and his wife Lillian were season ticket holders for many years. Another pastime was playing cards with his friends, first when he lived in Somerville and later with friends at Place Lane in Woburn, where he lived for a number of years before taking up residence with his son’s family in recent years. He loved spending time at the beach, basking in the sun, and during summers at the Cape, by “following the sun” in the sun porch. Fred and his late wife also wintered in Sarasota, Florida for a number of years following his retirement. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, to whom he was a beloved “Bampy.”

Along with his wife Lillian, he was preceded in death by his seven siblings: Thomas, William, John, Catherine, Mary, Anna, and Elizabeth.

Surviving are his son, Frederick L. Casey, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Woburn, and four grandchildren: Kyleen, Brian, Kevin, and Corey Rose Casey.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, November 15th, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
