OBITUARY:

Evelyn M. (Riley) Butler of Woburn, passed away after a lengthy illness, with her husband by her side, on Saturday, September 10th at the Winchester Hospital. The beloved wife of Thomas F. Butler, Sr., she was sixty-six years of age. Born in Boston, Evelyn was one of eight children born to the late Frank and Sarah (Hittenhiem) Riley. She was raised in Charlestown and was a graduate of Charlestown High School.

Evelyn moved to Woburn in the 1970’s after her marriage to Thomas Butler, Sr. A chance meeting at Friend’s Lumber in Somerville, led to thirty-five years of love and devotion to one another and their eight children. Evelyn was a very nurturing woman who cared deeply for her family and her loyalty to them was beyond reproach. She had the distinct honor of being a four Blue Star Mother, one of few to have four sons serving during war time.

Throughout her life, Evelyn was a hard working and extremely organized woman. She knew exactly where everything was in her home. From morning to night, her kitchen at home was the meeting place and the stove always on, ready and waiting. In her leisure, she and her husband enjoyed traveling to the Midwest and Oregon. She was an extremely devoted Patriots fan and loved Tom Brady.

When Evelyn wasn’t caring for her family, she drove Woburn’s special need students, spent some time as a lunch monitor and later became a cook at Woburn High School, the Kennedy Middle School and then the head cook at the White Elementary School.

Although she was small in stature, Evelyn will always be remembered as a strong willed woman with a huge, kind and generous heart along with a wonderful sense of humor that she will long be remembered for.

She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Sarah Riley, her brother,Ralph Riley and her sister, Lorraine MacDonald.

Evelyn is lovingly survived by her husband, Thomas F. Butler, Sr., her children, Robert M. Caplis and his companion Donna Donnelly, Ralph J. Caplis and his companion Heather Lea MacDonald, all of NH, John C. Caplis and his wife Christine of Templeton, Paul A. Caplis and his wife Kasey Jo of Woburn, Thomas F. Butler, Jr. and his wife Jennifer L. of Tewksbury, Kimberly A. Haley and her husband James of Somerville, Kelley A. Butler of Malden, and Michelle L. Butler of Bedford, her siblings, Helen Suida of Chelsea, Dorothy Kenny of Woburn, Eleanor DelRasso of Watertown, Warren Riley of Randolph, Kenneth Riley of Woburn, seventeen grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
