Charles H. Shea – in Woburn, June 3rd. Beloved husband of Ellen M. (Syple) Shea. Loving father of Patricia A. Andersen and her late husband Robert J. of Woburn, Maryellen Butcher and her husband Edward of Billerica, Charles H. Shea Jr. of Woburn, William M. Shea of Weymouth and Kelly M. Rose and her husband Robert J. of Derry, NH. Dear brother of Marie Doherty of Arlington and the late Evelyn Monahan, Doris Boushell, Jeremiah, Michael, Warren, Cornellius and James Shea. Devoted Grandfather of Robert J. Andersen, Edward Jr., Daniel and Thomas Butcher, Benjamin R. Shea, Kelsey, Jared, and Kaylee Rose and the late Michael Andersen and Great Grandfather of Leandrew Butcher. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Wednesday, June 8th at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at 10. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Calling hours Tuesday 4-8p.m. Donations may be made in Mr. Shea’s memory to the American Heart Assoc., 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

OBITUARY:

Charles H. Shea of Woburn passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3rd at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading after a brief illness. The beloved husband of Ellen M. (Syple) Shea, he was eighty-three years of age. Born in Cambridge, Charlie, as he was better known was one of nine children born to the late Michael and Nellie (Comerford) Shea. Raised in Central Square, he was a graduate of Cambridge High School after which he enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served during WWII seeing action in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. Upon completion of his military service, he returned home to Cambridge. He subsequently attended school to become a barber and also worked part time at Kresge’s Department Store.

In the late forties while attending a dance at the Riverside Boat House on the Charles River with a group of friends, Charlie met the woman who was to become the love of his life, Ellen Syple. They were married in 1952 and made their home in Cambridge where they raised their five children. His children were very active in athletics and he followed them throughout their growing years. As a family they vacationed at Hampton Beach during the summer months.

In 1958, Charlie was appointed to the Cambridge Police Department and was assigned to North Cambridge. He was dedicated to his job and his fellow officers for twenty-two years before his retirement in 1980. The friendships he formed while working continued well after his departure from the job and every day he would meet his buddies at Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds.

He and Ellen and often times friends, enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods and enjoyed cruises. He loved to walk the Mall where everyone knew and was a true sports fan. He followed the Red Sox but was a Yankee’s fan at heart.

Charlie was an extremely outgoing, kind and generous gentleman would cared deeply about his family and his friends.

He was a member of the Italian Club of Billerica and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts.

In addition to his five brothers, Gerard, Michael, Warren, Cornelius, and James Shea, Charles was predeceased by his grandson Michael S. Andersen and son-in-law Robert Andersen.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Ellen, to whom he was devoted to for fifty-nine years, his children , Patricia A. Andersen and her late husband Robert J. of Woburn, Maryellen Butcher and her husband Edward of Billerica, Charles H. Shea Jr. of Woburn, William M. Shea of Weymouth and Kelly M.   1. Uncle Charlie, my father Michael’s youngest brother, may your blissful rest be unending. A memorable role model for me when I was young, I still remember your smile, your kindness and your laughter those Sundays in Cambridge when we visited at grandmother’s on Pleasant St. May the Lord bestow on all your family a peace as deep as the pride they all had in you.

    Hey Grandpa,

    Besides my father you were the most influential male in my life. Sharing all the times with you and grandma were very special! I will never forget the times when we watched ball games, and passed the newspaper back and forth together. You always were there for me in every way possible. I will never forget you. I know you will be watching over all of us. We love you very much. Rest in peace grandpa.

    Goodbye Dad, I had to say
    I’ll remember the good times and try not to be sad. But saying goodbye still hurts so bad. I miss you more then I can express. My love for you will never grow less.
