OBITUARY:
Robert Francis “Butch” McDonough of Berwick, ME, passed away on Monday, February 28th at his home, surrounded by the familiar voices and gentle touches of those he loved.
Born in Woburn sixty-eight years ago, Mr. McDonough was the son of the late Thomas F. and Mary (Cassidy) McDonough. He was raised in Woburn and was a graduate of Woburn High School, Class of 1959. He continued his education at Northeastern University, where he studied chemical engineering.
Mr. McDonough met his wife Mary at his cousin’s wedding. After their marriage they resided in Billerica for a brief time before making their home in Dracut. Over the course of forty years of love and devotion to one another, Mr. McDonough often expressed his love with beautifully written cards and bouquets of flowers.
The proud father of two daughters, Mr. McDonough and his family spent many wonderful vacations at their cottage on Long Lake in Maine. Each morning he rose early and prepared breakfast for the family before a day of swimming, fishing and canoeing, all of which he taught he girls to do. His disciplined approach to raising his girls was combined with his great love and the high expectation she had for them. He was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes.
Mr. McDonough’s career in engineering began at the Cabot Corporation in Billerica and he later continued at Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, where he worked in research and development. He thoroughly enjoyed his profession and had the opportunity to work on many enjoyable projects before retiring in 2004. He formed many wonderful friendships while at Draper Labs and enjoyed playing golf and bridge with his fellow workers.
Most of all, Mr. McDonough enjoyed spending time at his home in Maine with his wife, where they have resided for the past fourteen years. He loved to read and work on projects around the house. In 2003, he and Mary renewed their wedding vows.
Mr. McDonough was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas F. and Mary (Cassidy) McDonough, and his younger brothers, Charles and Thomas McDonough.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary (Murphy) McDonough and his daughters, Maureen McDonough of Hudson and Catherine McDonough of Boston.
