OBITUARY:

Edith A. “Dede” Devine, 94, a lifelong Woburn resident, passed away at Winchester Hospital on Tuesday, December 14th, with her family at her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. James A. Devine, a well-known Woburn physician who died in 1975.

Edith was born in Woburn, daughter of the late Elias and Mary (Coyle) Blanchard. She graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1934, and earned a nursing degree from the Choate Hospital School of Nursing in 1937. She worked as a registered nurse at the Choate Hospital for a year prior to her marriage in 1938, at which time “Dede” devoted herself to raising their family. A wonderfully dedicated mother, she volunteered as a Cub Scout leader and den mother when her children were young, and supported each of them in all their endeavors. As a family they spent summers at Long Beach in Rockport for many years. Hosting the family for weekly dinners was an event she looked forward to. Always the center of activity, she made sure everyone had fun together. Throughout the years she remained supportive of her husband’s medical practice, she and “Doc” set up a polio clinic in the late 50’s and administered over 5,000 shots in one day.

Edith’s pastimes included knitting and crocheting, and she loved reading, often two or three books a week. She taught CCD at St. Barbara’s and held membership in the Mother Cabrini Guild and the St. Irene Club at St. Sebastian’s School.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were a daughter, Patricia Devine, two sisters, Jeannette C. Shea and Mary Louise Bourque, and two brothers, and Herbert E. and Wilbur “Buddy” Blanchard.

Surviving are six children: Mary Ellen Devine of Woburn, James E. and his wife Georgia of Sandown, NH, John J. and his late wife Claire, Thomas “Peter” and his wife Kathy, and Denis P. Devine, all of Woburn, Daniel L. and his wife Roberta of Wilmington, and the late Patricia Devine. She was also the loving grandmother of Steven, J. Mark, Keith, George, Michael, Christopher, Jay, Paul, Caitlin, Owen, Daniel, and James Devine, and great-grandmother of Jenna, Liam, Nora, and Molly Elizabeth.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Friday, December 17th at 10:45 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, at 11:30. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Calling hours at the funeral home are on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.

  6. Mary Ellen and Family

I know that when we lose a parent we lose a part of ourselves. It does not matter if we only had a short time together or the blessing of many years. When they go, a part of us goes with them, even as they leave a part of themselves behind. Remember the good times, keep her close in your heart and she will always be with you.
I have many happy memories of your Mom, I was always touched by her kindness and concern for our family growing up. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
