OBITUARY:

Mary Teresa Cadigan, a lifelong Woburn resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 17th, surrounded by her family, at the Wilmington Health Care Center.

Mary was born in Woburn, daughter of the late Thomas M. and Mary J. (Lydon) Flaherty. She graduated from St. Charles High School with the Class of 1949 and continued her education at Boston College. A “Golden Eagle,” she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from BC in 1954 with the third graduating class in the School of Nursing. A registered nurse with a career spanning 35 years, Mary worked at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Dorchester in the maternity ward for several years, and later was an instructor at the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing. Later in her career she worked for Windsor House Adult Day Health Care in Cambridge. Mary’s compassion and caring nature endeared her to her many patients over the years.

Mary was proud of her Irish heritage and traveled to Ireland many times. She also visited Las Vegas, Hawaii, and frequently enjoyed trips to Foxwoods. Family get-togethers were a highlight of her life. She was a sports fanatic and always kept abreast of everything that was happening, reading the daily newspapers from front to back.

Raising her five children as a single parent, she was an exceptional role model, ensuring they were well cared for while she worked full-time as a nurse. Through good times and bad, her wonderful sense of humor kept the family thriving. Her love of her grandchildren extended to all their friends, who affectionately called her “Nana” as well.

Preceding her in death, along with her parents, was her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Thomas A. Flaherty and his wife Anne.

Surviving are five children: Kathleen M. Gamboa Costello and Frances E. Cadigan, both of Woburn, Joan T. Grano of Florida, John J. Cadigan and his wife Diane of Framingham, and Elaine P. Whisenhunt and her husband Russell of Oklahoma, and a brother, John J. Flaherty and his wife Rita of Texas. She was also the loving “Nana” of Jessica Gamboa, Kaetlyn Costello, Rachel and Ashley Grano, Alicia and Stephen Cadigan, and Paige Autrey.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, October 22nd in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 11:30 a.m. Burial of her ashes will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. There are no calling hours.

Donations may be made in Mary’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
