WILLIAM F. RYAN, SR. – in Woburn, Tuesday, September 28th. Beloved husband of Mary G. (Crowley) Ryan. Devoted father of William F. Ryan, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Lowell, Kevin M. Ryan and his wife Darlene of Woburn, Donna M. Burns and her husband Michael of Tewksbury, Patricia A. DeMoura and her husband Anthony of Wilmington, and James J. Ryan of Woburn. Loving grandfather of Kenneth, Nicholas, Kathleen, and Marianne Ryan and Joseph DeMoura. Dear brother of Rev. Joseph Ryan OMI, Martin Ryan, John Ryan, and the late Mary Dionne and Ann Greenquist. A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Thursday, September 30th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn at 10:00 a.m. Calling hours will be held on Thursday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 prior to the Mass. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in Mr. Ryan’s memory to the Oblate World Mission Infirmary, 486 Chandler St Tewksbury, MA 01876-2849.

OBITUARY:

William F. Ryan Sr., a Woburn resident for many years, passed away peacefully at home, his wife by his side, on Tuesday, September 28th. The beloved husband of Mary G. (Crowley) Ryan, he was eighty-six years of age. Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Martin and Kathleen (McGann) Ryan. He was raised and educated in Cambridge and was a graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. Following high school, he worked as an electrician’s assistant before enlisting in the United States Army in 1943.

He proudly served his country in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during WWII.

After returning home, he found employment at the shipyard in Charlestown before securing a position with the New England Telephone Company in Malden. He worked as a switchman for a number of years and retired in 1983.

Sometime during the early 50’s, while a patient at Mt. Auburn Hospital, Mr. Ryan met a beautiful and caring nurse, Mary McGann, and they began dating. In 1958, they were married and a year later made their home in the Central Square section of Woburn. There Bill and Mary raised five children to whom he was most devoted

Mr. Ryan was a very quiet gentleman with an untiring work ethic. He loved his family dearly and was always there for them. In his leisure time, he enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and repairing cars.

In later years, he and his wife were blessed with five grandchildren, who loving called him “Papa”.

Mr. Ryan was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Dionne and Ann Greenquist.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Mary G. (Crowley) Ryan, his children, William F. Ryan, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Lowell, Kevin M. Ryan and his wife Darlene of Woburn, Donna M. Burns and her husband Michael of Tewksbury, Patricia A. DeMoura and her husband Anthony of Wilmington, and James J. Ryan of Woburn, his cherished grandchildren, Kenneth, Nicholas, Kathleen, and Marianne Ryan and Joseph DeMoura.
