JOHN F. McSHEFFREY, Jr. – in Woburn, May 15th. Beloved husband of the late Ann H. (Rossborough) McSheffrey. Devoted father of John F. “Jack” McSheffrey, Jr. and his wife Melissa of Woburn, Cheryl A. Chappell and her husband William of TN, Paul B. McSheffrey of Woburn, Lynn Gibson and her husband Ford of FL, Ann Marie MacDonald and her husband Paul of NH and Donald J. McSheffrey of Woburn. Dear brother of Robert “Bob” McSheffrey and his wife Betty of Woburn and the late Charles and Albert McSheffrey. Loving grandfather of twelve grandchildren and his late grandson Zachary. A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Thursday, May 20th at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St Anthony Church, 851 Main Street, Woburn at 10. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. Calling hours Wednesday 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in Mr. McSheffrey’s memory the Woburn Council of Social Concern, 2 Merrimac Street, Woburn, MA 01801.

OBITUARY:

John F. McSheffrey, Jr., a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away Saturday, May 15th, at the Hospice House in Haverhill. The beloved husband of the late Ann H. (Rossborough) McSheffrey, he was eighty-four years of age.

Raised in the Central Square section of Woburn, John attended the Wyman School and was a member of the Class of 1941 at Woburn High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps following high school, where he proudly served during World War II.

Upon his return home, John began working in the retail business at Beggs and Cobbs Tannery in Woburn. During this time he was introduced to his future wife Ann by her cousin. In 1952, they were married and became the proud parents of six children. John spent most of his career in the Probation Department at the Woburn District Court. He was very well liked by his fellow workers who gave him the moniker, “Gentleman John” easily recognizable by his signature mustache and his upbeat personality. John always saw the good in everyone.

After his retirement in 1997, he and his wife, who were devoted to one another for over fifty years, continued to enjoy spending time together. The loved to cruise and to travel , visiting destinations such as Hawaii, Europe, Alaska and Florida. Boca Raton became their new home during the winter months where they enjoyed golfing and spending time with their many friends.

Over the years, the McSheffreys shared many wonderful times together as a family. Holidays took on a special meaning as they would gather together at their family home. Family cookouts became frequent events and were enjoyed by all. John also spent a great deal of time with his three brothers, who were “best friends” throughout their lives, spending countless hours together routing for the Red Sox, Patriots and other local teams. In later years, John and Ann were blessed with thirteen grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Grandpa”.

In addition to his beloved wife, Ann H. (Rossborough) McSheffrey, who passed away in 2003, John was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and Albert McSheffrey, and his grandson, Zachary.

He is lovingly survived by his children, John F. “Jack” McSheffrey and his wife Melissa of Woburn, Cheryl A. Chappell and her husband William of TN, Paul B. McSheffrey of Woburn, Lynn Gibson and her husband Ford of FL, Ann Marie MacDonald and her husband Paul of NH and Donald J. McSheffrey of Woburn, his brother, Robert “Bob” McSheffrey and his wife Betty of Woburn, and thirteen grandchildren.

A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Thursday, May 20th at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St Anthony Church, 851 Main Street, Woburn at 10. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Calling hours at the funeral home are on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in Mr. McSheffrey’s memory the Woburn Council of Social Concern, 2 Merrimac Street, Woburn, MA 01801.
