OBITUARY:

Virgina P. Gonsalves, a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away quietly at the Woburn Nursing Center, Thursday afternoon, after a lengthy illness. Born in Woburn eighty-one years ago, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Stella (Cambria) Gonsalves.

She had attended Woburn Schools and was a graduate of Woburn High School Class of 1944. Following high school Virginia went to work for Travelers Insurance Company in Boston, where she remained for ten years. Looking for a change in her professional career, she began work for the newly formed Woburn Medical Associates, on Warren Ave in Woburn, where she remained until her retirement at age sixty five.

Throughout Virginia’s life she was held very dear by not only her brothers, but her nieces and nephews and her great nieces and nephews. She spent much time attending their school and sporting activities, movie outings, trips for ice cream and always made her available as a babysitter at any given time. “Auntie Dee” as she was affectionately known to her family, was extremely dedicated not only to her family but also her faith. She devoted many hours to St. Barbara’s Church, assisting as a Eucharistic Minister and was also very instrumental in the Thousand Club, from its inception, right up until a year ago when her health began to fail. After retirement, she took up golfing along with her very dear lady friends, and every week for a number of years thereafter, they would hit the links in Middleton.

Virginia had also served as the Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, an organization to whom she tirelessly dedicated herself to a myriad of activities. When available time presented itself, Virginia she enjoyed day bus trips to Mohegan Sun, reading the newspaper and doing crossword puzzles.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Gonsalves

She is lovingly survived by her brother, Edward F. Gonsalves and his wife Betty of Woburn, her nieces and nephews, Kieth Gonsalves and his wife Lisa of CA, Brenda Wessling of Billerica, Bruce Gonsalves and his wife Cheryl and Brett Gonsalves all of Woburn and her great nieces and nephews, Christopher, Harrison, Matthew, Tessa, Jenna, Sarah and Allison and her dear cousin, Tina Waldrep of Wakefield.

A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Monday, August 25th at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at 10. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
