OBITUARY:

Barbara Marques passed away late Wednesday evening, February 20th, following an illness of many years. Born in Somerville sixty-seven years ago, she was the daughter of the late Rudolph J. and Alice (Mahoney) Marques. She was a graduate of Somerville High School in 1958 and continued studying at Harvard University throughout her lifetime.

In 1960 she and her parents nestled into a wonderful neighborhood in the West side of Woburn were Barbara has made her home. Following high school Barbara worked as an executive secretary for the Watertown Arsenal for over ten years. She was a very devout Christian and parishioner, and for several years she served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Barbara’s Church Throughout Barbara’s life, she had continued her pursuit for knowledge through courses at Harvard University and voraciously reading many different genres when not taking courses. She acquired an early enjoyment for music from her parents, which she carried and refined throughout her lifetime, always listening, enjoying and dancing to the fine melodies of plays, musicals, operas and ballads.

Her neighbors were particularly special to her, sharing in the day to day happenings. Cooking and knitting afghans and booties for others was a true pleasure for her.

Spending time with the children in the neighborhood was time that Barbara loved. Throughout the years a wonderful bond was established and continued right up to the hours before her death. She loved talking, laughing, listening and working with them in and around her home, and they always held a very special place in her heart. Barbara would often refer to them as “her knights in shining armor”.

Barbara is lovingly survived by her very dear cousins, Jean Spezzafero, Janet and Lisa Devlin, all of Billerica, and Lee O’Donnell of New Hampshire, her devoted best friend, Christine McQuade of Arlington, and her very wonderful neighbors, the Allenders and Marjorie Swanson.

A memorial mass will be celebrated in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, on Saturday, February 23rd at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no calling hours.

Donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, MA 01801. Arrangements are being handled by the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.
