Rita E. McGondel, a lifelong Woburn resident, passed away at Winchester Hospital on Tuesday, November 20th, at the age of eighty-four. She was the wife of the late Charles E. McGondel, Jr., who died in 1990.
Born in Winchester, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary J. (Keizer) Kelley. She was raised in the South End of Woburn and was a graduate of Woburn High School.
When her children were young, the family spent many happy summers at Wabanaki campground in New Hampshire, and at the beach in Swampscott. Rita was very involved in her children’s activities as they were growing up, and coached baseball teams for a number of years for her daughter. After her children were older, she worked as a dental assistant, and later worked as a secretary in the Public Works Department for the City of Woburn, from 1968 until her retirement 18 years later. She had a keen interest in the politics of the city and enjoyed her involvement in that arena. She was also very proud of the ten years she spent working with Weight Watchers. She was a friendly woman who always told it like it was, with no punches pulled.
Her hobbies included reading mysteries, cooking, and watching the Food Channel. Saturdays were spent with her daughter and she particularly loved going out to restaurants. Rita was active in the Woburn Senior Center and a traveling ceramics club. Her grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Susie,” were very special to her.
Preceding her in death, along with her husband Charles, were a daughter, Lynne C. Norton, and two brothers, Jack and Alan Kelley.
Surviving are a daughter, Kristen E. Duffany, and a son, Peter E. McGondel and his wife Dorothy, both of Woburn, and a brother, Paul Kelley of Connecticut. She was also the loving grandmother of Shannon and Sean Brady, Michael Norton, David Jones, Tracy, Teryn and Eric McGondel, Kate Wininger and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Saturday, November 24th at 9 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Donations may be made in Mrs. McGondel’s memory to the Moebius Syndrome Foundation, P.O.Box 147, Pilot Grove, MO 65276.
