HERBERT E. “Bobby” BLANCHARD – in Woburn, unexpectedly, July 18th. Beloved husband of the late Margaret (Benullo) Blanchard. Devoted father of David J. Blanchard and his wife Debbie of Littleton, CO, Patricia Blanchard-Ritchey and her husband Scot Ritchey of Sour Lake, TX and the late Robert “Blinky” Blanchard. Dear brother of Edith “Dede” Devine of Woburn and the late Jeannette Shea, Lorraine Bourque and Wilbur “Buddy” Blanchard. Loving grandfather of Michelle Lee and David Ross Blanchard, and Ian Scot and Hope Margaret Ritchey. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Monday, July 23rd at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in St. Anthony Church, 851 Main Street, North Woburn at 10. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in Mr. Blanchard’s memory to the VA Medical Center, 1400 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132.

OBITUARY:

Herbert E. Blanchard, a lifelong Woburn resident died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 18th at the age of eighty-five. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret M. (Benullo) Blanchard, who died in 1988.

Born and raised in Woburn, he was the son of the late Elias and Mary (Coyle) Blanchard. Educated in Woburn schools, he was a 1941 graduate of Woburn High School. Upon his graduation he entered the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the European Theater of Operations. In 1944 he participated in a convoy escort which was attacked by German aircraft in the Mediterranean Sea, and as a result was awarded a Bronze Star.

Mr. Blanchard, known affectionately to family and friends as “Bobby,” worked as a truck driver for most of his life, and later as a supervisor in a transportation company. He primarily worked for Capitol Motors and Schuster Express.

He was a member of the VFW and the George Campbell Post 101 American Legion, and was a lifetime member of the Woburn Lodge of Elks.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Massachusetts Veterans Association, Winchester Rehab/Nursing Center, and especially to his devoted nephew, Jim Rastellini and his wife Ellen of Woburn.

In addition to his wife Margaret, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert “Blinky” Blanchard, two sisters, Jeannette Shea and Lorraine Bourque, and a brother, Wilbur “Buddy” Blanchard.

Surviving are a son, David J. Blanchard and his wife Debbie of Littleton, Colorado, a daughter, Patty M. Blanchard-Ritchey and her husband Scot of Sour Lake, Texas, and a sister, Edith “Dede” Devine of Woburn.

He was also the beloved grandfather of Michelle Lee and David Ross Blanchard, and Ian Scot and Hope Margaret Ritchey.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Monday, July 23rd at 9 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Anthony Church, 851 Main Street, North Woburn at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m.
