OBITUARY:

Robert F. “Bob” Burns of Woburn passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 13th, surrounded by his family. Bob was the loving husband of Martha A. (Doherty) Burns.

Born in Woburn sixty-six years ago, he was the son of the late George F. and Henrietta (Smith) Burns, Jr. He was a 1958 graduate of Woburn High School and married Martha, his high school sweetheart, to whom he was devoted for almost forty-six years. He went on to attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.

Bob worked for the D.L. Maher Company for fifteen years as a well driller, and then was appointed club manager of the Woburn Lodge of Elks, a position he held for nearly twenty years until his retirement in 2004. In addition to the Elks, of which he also served as a trustee, he held membership in the Irish American Club.

Bob loved the beach and enjoyed many summers on the Cape when he was younger. More recently he had many happy times at Hampton Beach with his family. Just three weeks ago he was able to travel with his wife Martha to Ogunquit, Maine, one of their favorite spots. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening as a pastime.

His happiest hours were spent with his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of their accomplishments and never missed an activity or sporting event in which one of them was involved.

Along with his beloved wife Martha, he leaves four daughters, Marcia Tibur and her husband Joseph of Woburn, Patricia Mariano and her husband Anthony of Pepperell, Laura Burns Giordano and her husband Paul of Wilmington, and Brenda Burns Yorba and her husband Richard of Billerica, and a son, Robert F. Burns, Jr. and his wife Louisa of Woburn. He also leaves two sisters, Betsey Lenberg and her husband Frank of Norway, Maine, and Jean Maguire and her husband Tom of Woburn, and a brother, George F. Burns III and his wife Sandra of Reading.

Bob was the beloved “Bumpy” of Sara and Scott Tibur, Danielle and Kaitlin Mariano, Robert F. III and Brandon Burns, Kevin Burns and Joseph Giordano, and Michael and Tyler Yorba.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Wednesday, May 16th, at 10:45 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 11:30. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the Eric T. Hill Foundation, c/o Marguerite Hill, 10 Aurelie Lane, Dracut, MA 01826 (erichillfoundation.com) for children and their families with medical needs.
